As someone who has witnessed the disparities in healthcare access firsthand, I recognize how critical it is to address these inequities to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity for prevention, timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and quality survivorship. One way to advance cancer equity is through expanding access to clinical research. Clinical trials often lack diversity, which means treatments might not be optimized for all populations. By increasing inclusive trial participation, especially among historically underserved communities, we can generate more representative data that informs better therapies for everyone. Community engagement plays a fundamental role in bridging these gaps. Building trust and partnerships in local communities helps raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourages individuals to participate in screening programs and research initiatives. For example, culturally tailored education and outreach have proven effective in motivating people from underrepresented groups to seek cancer screening and to enroll in clinical studies. Moreover, health equity in oncology requires a multidisciplinary approach—researchers, clinicians, caregivers, and advocates must collaborate to close the persistent gaps in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term survivorship. Personally, I have observed how coordinated efforts that combine scientific advancements with compassionate care lead to meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.
