When visiting Ayutthaya, I found Wat Chaiwatthanaram to be an unforgettable highlight of the trip. The temple, with its impressive Khmer-style architecture, offers incredible photo opportunities and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts the city's modern bustle. Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honor his mother, and it served as a royal monastery for centuries. Walking through the temple grounds, I was struck by the harmonious layout of the main prang (tower) surrounded by smaller chedis, all reflecting the rich spiritual and cultural history of Ayutthaya. Apart from the architecture, the temple’s location along the Chao Phraya River creates breathtaking views, especially at sunset. It’s easily accessible from Bangkok, making it perfect for a day trip to explore these ancient ruins. In addition to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, the entire Ayutthaya Historical Park is packed with other notable ruins and temples worth visiting. To make the most of your visit, consider renting a bicycle or joining a guided tour that covers multiple sites. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water as the site involves some walking under the sun. Exploring these ruins really deepened my appreciation for Thailand’s rich history and the legacy of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
