🎓 REGALIA COLOR STORY & SYMBOLISM
For my commencement in July, graduates are required to wear the traditional black and red regalia.
As a Fashion Stylist, I respected the assignment.
I just added my own version asap. 😂
Rather than focusing on the required colors, I built my custom regalia around a softer academic palette inspired by Psychology, achievement, leadership, and personal growth.
🧠 Brain Patch | Blush, Buttercream & Sage
The piece that started it all.
I purchased this patch before completing my degree as motivation. Long before graduation day, it became a visual reminder of the goal. Every other detail was styled around it.
🤎 Chocolate Brown Gown
Rich, grounded, and timeless. The chocolate tone created the perfect foundation for the softer colors layered throughout the design.
🧈 Buttercream Hood
The centerpiece of the look. The warm buttercream tone became the canvas for every patch, cord, medal, and symbol representing my academic journey. Traditionally represents the degree earned and academic discipline. For me, it also helped tie together the color story and symbolism throughout the entire look.

Represents graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.88 GPA.
One of the most meaningful academic distinctions incorporated into the design.

Creating custom regalia for graduation offers a wonderful opportunity to express personal identity and the journey behind academic achievements. In my own experience helping friends and peers with their commencement outfits, I've seen how the choice of colors, patches, and accessories can transform plain regalia into meaningful statements. Take the use of a brain patch, for example - a blush, buttercream, and sage-colored emblem symbolizing both the field of Psychology and the graduate's personal growth. Such details became motivational visually and emotionally throughout the education process.
