“I want to thank myself.”

That line from 19-year-old French Open champion Mirra Andreeva sparked some debate.

After the biggest win of her life on Saturday, the Russian winner said it was important to recognize her own hard work, resilience, and growth.

But it is not something we often see, as many athletes fear being criticized as arrogant.

But Andreeva is making it a mantra, and a tagline as younger athletes see it as a symbol of self respect.

What do you think?

6/10 Edited to

... Read moreMirra Andreeva’s decision to publicly thank herself after winning the French Open provides a fascinating insight into the evolving mindset of athletes, especially the younger generation. Traditionally, athletes have often been cautious about expressing self-congratulation to avoid perceptions of arrogance. However, Andreeva’s honest acknowledgment of her own effort and mental strength highlights a growing trend: valuing self-appreciation as part of overall mental wellness. This approach aligns with the rising awareness around mental health in sports. Athletes like Naomi Osaka have also emphasized self-recognition and openness about the psychological challenges they face. Winning at the highest level involves not just physical talent but overcoming emotional and mental hurdles, such as dealing with pressure, criticism, and personal struggles. Andreeva's experience is further complicated by external factors, such as competing without the support of a national flag due to geopolitical constraints, and managing her emotions on court with professional psychological help. Thanking her psychologist shows the importance of mental health professionals in athletes’ journeys. This transparency from young champions serves as encouragement for others to prioritize their mental resilience and self-care. Moreover, appreciating oneself is not unusual in sports, but historically it has been more accepted among male athletes—icons like Muhammad Ali, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Usain Bolt have famously proclaimed their greatness. Andreeva’s open expression shifts this dynamic, empowering female athletes to embrace confidence and assert their achievements without fear of criticism. In essence, recognizing one’s own hard work and growth is a vital part of building lasting success and self-respect. Mirra Andreeva’s mantra encourages all athletes to appreciate their efforts and mental endurance as integral components of victory. It also invites fans and commentators to reevaluate how self-recognition is perceived in sports culture, making space for a healthier, more supportive dialogue around athlete wellbeing and success.
