💭When I saw there was going to be a book 2, I might’ve freaked out a little. I LOVE Death Trap. Like LOVE that book. Then to find out it focuses on Shem? The scream I scrumpt in excitement lol. Did I consume this book like it would disappear if I stopped? Yes. Do I regret it? No. I didn’t care how little sleep I got; I needed to know what was going to happen with Shem! Then the book focuses on Hecate too! Ha! IYKYK with me 🌙🗝️. This book just kept getting better and better. Then you add in it’s a M/M romance! I was like nope, I’m done. Don’t bother me until I’m finished with this book because I am officially living in this world until then. The book absolutely lived up to my expectations. The spice was deliciously written, and the angst is my favorite. I flipping live for angst. Then Shem’s backstory, of course, had me crying. Honestly, who could read that and not have some type of feelings? Mine just decided to leak out of my eyes lol. The whole hecate addition was interesting, suspenseful, and tied perfectly into book 1. As with book 1, it is dark and steeped in religious lore (which is one of the many reasons I adore this and book 1). Oof, such an amazing book, I loved it!
💬This paranormal romance is book 2 in The Murder and Mayhem series. This book is full of dark themes. Check all your trigger warnings. The romance in this book is an angsty pre-existing relationship from a previous book. The book is very spicy with very descriptive *fun* open door spice. Gabe and Shem are in Salem to find Hecate. What they find is angels playing games with people’s souls, and Hecate in hiding. Seeing the angels brings up Shem’s broken past, and if he can’t move past it, then it could mean the end for him and Gabe.
... Read moreAfter devouring 'Hell Cat,' I've been reflecting on what makes Alexandra St. Pierre's writing so captivating, especially within her 'Murder and Mayhem' series. For anyone who, like me, is drawn to stories that push boundaries and delve into the darker facets of paranormal romance, her books are an absolute must-read. If you're searching for more Alexandra St. Pierre books after finishing 'Hell Cat,' you'll find her signature blend of intense emotion, intricate world-building, and unapologetic spice consistently woven throughout her work. She has a talent for crafting characters that are complex and flawed, making their journeys of healing and love all the more poignant.
'Hell Cat' truly shines as the second installment in 'The Murder and Mayhem' series. While it can be enjoyed as a standalone, reading 'Death Trap' first provides such a rich foundation for understanding the intricate lore and the pre-existing relationships. This series isn't just about angels and demons; it's a deep dive into ancient religious influences, magic, and the messy grey areas between good and evil. The way St. Pierre builds this world, with its angels playing games with souls and witches navigating hidden dangers, is incredibly immersive. It makes you feel like you're right there with Shem and Gabe as they uncover secrets and confront their pasts. The underlying mythology is so detailed and unique, it truly sets this series apart from other paranormal romances I've read.
What I particularly adore about this book, and the series as a whole, is its commitment to the 'dark romance' label. It doesn't shy away from difficult themes, which is why checking trigger warnings is always a good idea. The M/M romance between Shem and Gabe is beautifully developed, full of angst and undeniable chemistry. Their healing arc is central to the story, and it's handled with such sensitivity amidst all the supernatural chaos. It’s not just about the spice, which is definitely well-written and open-door, but about the profound emotional connection and growth that unfolds. This is the kind of romance that makes your heart ache in the best possible way.
Thinking about the visual aspect, the 'Hell Cat' book cover itself offers intriguing clues to the story within. The imagery of flowers, often symbolizing beauty or growth, is starkly contrasted with elements like brass knuckles and chains. This combination perfectly encapsulates the contrasting themes of vulnerability and underlying danger that permeate the narrative, hinting at the brutal yet tender journey the characters undertake. It's a cover that promises a dark and edgy read. And for those curious about the phrase "I am the cat in the Hell Cat book" – it deeply resonates with the fierce, independent spirit of certain characters and the untamed nature of this paranormal world. Whether it's a character's inner strength or a symbolic representation of their survival instincts, the 'cat' imagery is certainly palpable within the story's themes of cunning and resilience. This book, and really all of Alexandra St. Pierre's contributions to the genre, excels at delivering a thrilling, emotionally charged experience that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. If you're looking for a book that will consume you, this is it.
