💭 This book shocked me with how good it was, if I’m honest. The world was cool. The magic system was definitely interesting AF. It was darker than I expected too. The romance is a slow burn with enemies-to-lovers vibes. There were some parts I did predict, and then there were areas that completely threw me off. Like, I’m going to be honest, the ending had me sitting there in a “wtf did I just read?!” moment. It is one of those cliffhangers. It has a whole trial/military school type vibe to it. She’s the chosen one, but not, and reluctant AF. I definitely will be watching for book two because, like, what! So good!
💬 This fantasy romance is book 1 in a new series. This book does have some darker themes. The romance in this book is enemies to lovers. This book does have some steamy content, but the book is overall clean. Isola knows it’s time to be put to the test to make sure she isn’t dragon cursed. The problem is she is afraid she just might be. Those cursed turn into mindless dragons. It’s an instant death sentence. Lucan, the vicar’s son, can’t even escape this fate. When alliances are made during their tests, he turns out not to be who she thought he was. Instead, he turns into the person she can turn to.

The author does an incredible job of making you feel the fear and desperation of the characters. Then there's the romance, which is a masterclass in Enemies to Lovers. Every interaction is charged with unspoken emotions and hidden agendas, making their eventual connection incredibly rewarding. Speaking of Secrets, this book is absolutely packed with them! Just when you think you've figured things out, another layer of mystery is unveiled. Both main characters are burdened by their own hidden truths, and watching them navigate a world full of suspicion, where anyone could be 'cursed,' keeps you on the edge of your seat. This constant uncovering of Secrets adds so much depth to the plot and keeps the pacing sharp. The 'military school/trial' aspect mentioned in the review is a huge highlight for me. These Life Threatening Deadly Trials are not just physical challenges; they're psychological battlegrounds that force characters to confront their deepest fears and make impossible choices. It perfectly complements the dystopian setting and the ever-present threat of the Dragons. It’s not just about surviving, but about proving your worth in a world that's ready to condemn you. The atmosphere reminded me of some of the best 'trials of the cursed' narratives I've encountered. And that ending? Oh my goodness, the cliffhanger had me staring at my ceiling for hours!
