Be sure you read the Trigger Warnings⚠️
"Little Stranger" by Leigh Rivers is a compelling and psychologically twisted story that explores a complex relationship. Rivers' prose is engaging, and she skillfully develops the characters and their intertwined lives. The plot unfolds at a good pace, keeping the reader invested in the unfolding drama. I appreciated the author's ability to create a palpable sense of atmosphere and place, truly drawing me into the world of the characters.
However, while I enjoyed the overall story, I did find myself occasionally uncomfortable with the way the female protagonist spoke to the male lead. While their relationship is clearly meant to be fraught and complicated, and their connection as family is a key element of the narrative, the constant emphasis on their familial bond through repeated references felt somewhat heavy-handed. It detracted somewhat from my enjoyment of their dynamic, though I understand it likely served a narrative purpose in highlighting the complexities of their connection.
Despite this, "Little Stranger" is a thought-provoking read that delves into the intricacies of human relationships. If you enjoy stories with complex characters and aren't averse to some emotionally charged interactions, this book is definitely worth considering. I'd recommend it with the caveat about the dialogue and the repetitive emphasis on their familial ties, as it may not appeal to all readers.
