Mikasa Ackerman!

It's always such a joy to bring a beloved character to life through art, and Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan is definitely one of my favorites! I wanted to share a bit more about the process behind this particular fanart piece. When I decided to draw Mikasa, I was really inspired by her strength, determination, and iconic look. Choosing a pose, especially incorporating a red bikini top, felt like a fun way to capture a different, perhaps more relaxed, side of her while still maintaining her recognizable features, like her signature short black hair. It's a challenge to balance fan expectations with personal artistic vision, but that's part of the fun! Starting with a preliminary blue pencil sketch on pastel paper allowed me to play around with the composition and form without committing too early. I find that pastel paper gives such a beautiful texture that really makes colors pop and adds a unique softness to the finished piece. It's also great for layering. Once I was happy with the sketch, I moved on to the traditional art drawing. This is where the magic really happens for me! I love working with color pencils, and for this piece, I primarily used my Faber-Castell Polychromos. They blend so smoothly and allow for incredible detail, especially when layering colors to get the right shading and depth – it truly helps capture the nuances of her skin tone and the fabric of the bikini. One of the things I focused on was the outlining. I experimented with outlining in yellow and white to give it a bit of a glow and make Mikasa stand out from the background, almost like she's popping off the page. Sometimes, a marker can also be really useful for crisp lines or adding depth, which I incorporated in some areas, especially for those sharper edges. It’s always a delicate balance to make sure the outlines enhance the drawing without overwhelming the delicate color work. Creating fanart like this isn't just about the finished piece; it's also about the journey and the connection it creates.
