Preparing for the next school year

It’s good to start thinking about the things you need for the next semester or for the next school year. Here are 4 tips for you to consider now:

1. Gather school materials

2. Review academic material

3. Establish a routine

4. Set goals and plan ahead

Each slide goes into greater detail of how to properly prepare yourself on each point.

Are you getting ready for the next school year?

... Read moreOkay, so 'gather school materials' seems obvious, right? But I learned the hard way that it's more than just buying new pens. My best tip? Take inventory of everything you already have before you even think about shopping. You'd be surprised what's hiding in your drawers! Then, make a list – a detailed one. Think about what subjects you're taking and what specific tools you'll need. For example, if you're taking art, you might need special sketchbooks or paints, not just basic notebooks. I always try shopping early to avoid the mad rush and get the best deals. Last year, I waited too long and couldn't find the exact binder I wanted, which stressed me out. Organizing your materials ahead of time also makes a huge difference. I use a color-coding system for each subject and dedicated pouches for smaller items like highlighters and sticky notes. It makes finding things so much quicker during the school day! Reviewing academic material isn't about re-doing a whole year of work, but just keeping those brain muscles active. I found that spending even 30 minutes a few times a week on subjects I struggled with last year made a world of difference. For math, I'd just do a few practicing math problems from old textbooks or online quizzes. For history, I'd re-read notes on key events. And for language skills, I'd try watching a foreign film with subtitles or reading a short story in that language. It's surprising how much you retain, and it definitely reduces that 'first-day-back' shock. The 'establish a routine' point is a lifesaver, especially for sleep! My biggest mistake used to be pulling all-nighters right before school started. Now, about two weeks out, I start adjusting my sleep schedule by going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night and waking up 15 minutes earlier. It's a gentle way to get back on track. Beyond sleep, I also try to map out a balanced routine that includes dedicated study times (even if it's just an hour for light reading) and, importantly, leisure time. Don't forget to schedule fun! A balanced routine helps manage stress and makes the school year feel less overwhelming. Finally, set goals and plan ahead! This is where I really get motivated. Instead of vague ideas, I try to make my goals specific. For example, instead of 'get better grades', I might aim for 'improve my English grade by one letter' or 'join a new club to meet more people'. I also focus on improving time management skills – maybe by using a planner more consistently or trying the Pomodoro technique. For planning, I literally sit down with my calendar and organize my calendar with all known important dates, like holidays, exam periods, and project due dates. It gives me a visual roadmap for the entire semester. This proactive approach makes me feel so much more in control and ready to tackle whatever the school year throws my way!
