How to study faster 🤓

2024/9/5 Edited to

... Read moreWe've all been there – staring at a mountain of material, feeling exhausted before we even start. That's exactly why I began my quest to find methods that truly make studying faster and more effective, without sacrificing understanding. It’s not just about spending more hours; it’s about making those hours count. Based on my own experience and what's worked wonders for me, here’s how I manage to study at what feels like 2x speed. First off, diving deep into study techniques was a game-changer. I personally swear by the Pomodoro Technique. It’s incredibly simple but powerfully effective for maintaining focus. I set a timer for 25 minutes of intense, distraction-free work, followed by a 5-minute break. After four of these cycles, I take a longer break, say 15-30 minutes. This structured approach has helped me tackle even the most daunting subjects and significantly reduced my procrastination. Another favorite is the 'Eat the Frog' method, where I tackle my most challenging task first thing in the morning – getting it out of the way makes the rest of the day feel so much lighter. Beyond just managing time, truly testing my knowledge has been crucial for accelerated learning and, more importantly, for not forgetting what I’ve learned. I used to just re-read my notes, thinking I was studying. But now, I actively quiz myself. Flashcards are a lifesaver for active recall, especially when I make them myself. For complex subjects, I use the Feynman Technique: I pretend I’m explaining the concept to someone who knows nothing about it. If I can't explain it simply and clearly, I know exactly where my understanding gaps are. And yes, practicing with past year's questions (PYQ's) is non-negotiable, especially when preparing for finals. It's not just about memorizing; it's about understanding how to apply the information. Planning my day effectively isn't just about having a to-do list; it’s about strategic allocation of my energy. I use a planner to break down larger study goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This approach helps reduce stress and gives me a clear roadmap for what needs to be done. It also helps me integrate spaced repetition into my study schedule – reviewing material at increasing intervals to move information into long-term memory. This is key for studying fast without forgetting. Consistency, for me, comes from sticking to this plan as much as possible and being flexible when life happens, rather than abandoning it entirely. Finally, taking breaks is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for sustained, high-quality study. I used to push myself until I was completely burnt out, but I’ve learned that my brain needs downtime to process information and recharge. My breaks aren't just mindless scrolling; sometimes I'll go for a short walk, stretch, or even just listen to a favorite song. This helps me avoid straining work and keeps me effective. To minimize distractions during my focused study blocks, I keep my phone in another room or use website blockers. Creating a dedicated study space, free from clutter, also signals to my brain that it's time to focus. Remember, learning to rest is just as important as learning to study.
