First day touring apartments as a college student
today was my first day touring apartments as a college student.
Apartment A:
experience—I found a super cute, newly renovated studio online with stainless steel appliances and great lighting. When I got there, the unit smelled a bit musty, the windows were tiny, and there were no overhead lights in the bedroom! Plus, the "amenities" were out of order.
takeaway—Always look past the staged furniture and pretty paint. Check the actual windows for drafts, test the faucets, and ask if the unit you are touring is the exact one you’d be renting.
---
Apartment B
experience—I toured a house a block from campus with super cheap rent. It looked great on the surface, but the door locks felt incredibly flimsy, there were deadbolt marks on the outside of the doors, and the neighborhood felt really unsafe after dark.
takeaway—Never sacrifice your safety to save a few bucks. Always tour the immediate neighborhood, check that the doors and windows lock securely, and trust your gut if something feels "off".
---
Apartment C
experience— I toured a gorgeous, brand-new student living complex right by the library. It had a gym, a rooftop pool, and free coffee! But when they handed me the lease breakdown, the rent, parking fees, and utility packages were way out of my student budget.
takeaway—Know your hard budget before you ever book an appointment. Ask about hidden fees—like trash collection, internet, and processing fees—so you don't fall in love with a place you can't actually afford.
