interlaken from up here 😍
My absolute favorite memory from my trip to Interlaken, Switzerland, has to be the jaw-dropping panoramic views from Harder Kulm. Often called the 'Top of Interlaken,' this viewpoint truly lives up to its name, offering an unparalleled aerial perspective of the region's stunning natural beauty. I remember stepping off the funicular and being immediately captivated by the sight of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, shimmering in their iconic turquoise hues, framed by the majestic peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. It’s a scene straight out of a postcard, but even more vivid in person! Getting to Harder Kulm is an adventure in itself. From Interlaken Ost train station, it’s just a short walk to the Harder Kulm funicular base station. The funicular ride itself is steep and scenic, taking about ten minutes to ascend to the top. I found myself pressing my face against the window, watching the landscape unfold beneath me. It’s definitely the most convenient and exciting way to reach this incredible vantage point, and the views start even before you arrive at the summit. Once at the top, which stands at an impressive 1322 meters (approximately 4,337 feet) above sea level, you’ll find yourself on a viewing platform known as the 'Two Lakes Bridge.' This cantilevered platform extends out over the edge, giving you an unobstructed, almost floating sensation above the valley. From here, you can clearly distinguish the two distinct turquoise colors of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, separated by the town of Interlaken. The reason for their striking color is the glacial meltwater carrying fine sediment, which reflects light in a unique way. It's truly a spectacle of nature that words or even photos can barely capture – you really need to see it with your own eyes to appreciate the scale and vibrancy. Beyond the breathtaking views, Harder Kulm offers a delightful experience. There’s a charming Panorama Restaurant with a sun terrace, perfect for enjoying a meal or a drink while soaking in the scenery. I highly recommend trying some local Swiss specialties while you’re there! There are also easy walking trails around the summit, ideal for a leisurely stroll and finding different photo angles. If you have more time, you can even visit the small Alpine wildlife park nearby, home to marmots and ibexes, which adds another charming dimension to your visit. To make the most of your trip, I'd suggest checking the weather forecast before you go. Clear skies are essential for the best visibility. I visited in the late afternoon, and the light was absolutely magical, perfect for photography as the sun began to dip, casting a golden glow over the lakes and mountains. Allow at least 2-3 hours for the entire experience, including the funicular ride, enjoying the views, and perhaps a bite to eat. Don't forget your camera, sunglasses, and maybe an extra layer, as it can be a bit cooler at the top. Harder Kulm isn't just a viewpoint; it's an immersive experience that will leave you with lasting memories of Switzerland's incredible natural beauty. It's definitely a must-do for anyone visiting Interlaken!
