Day 1 on the West Coast Trail kicked off at Pachena Bay with 30lb packs and way too much stoke to finally finish the trail we had to bail onh alfway through last year for a twisted ankle. We knocked out 14 km to Darling River Campground with with only a few sketchy ladders, zero cable cars (yet), and plenty of boardwalks, slippery roots trying to trip us (and succeeded), and some sunny tide-dependent beach walks.
Highlights: sea lions doing their thing, stumbling across a random abandoned motorbike (and rode it, duh), setting up camp at the dreamiest site with its own hammock and swing, and wandering upriver to filter water where we found a hidden waterfall straight out of FernGully. 🌿
Dinner was the gourmet trail version of pizza (Mountain House dehydrated meals). We sat on the beach with our spoons, watching the waves roll in, waiting for whales that never showed up but that's okay. Next time.
