If your car breaks down in the middle of the night, you’re ALONE, and tow trucks aren’t available, DO THIS PLEASE! Prioritize your safety FIRST!

I travel the country for a living, teaching self defense classes, and I’ve made so many late drives. I’ve also experienced a handful of car troubles in the middle of the night and situations that didn’t make me feel super comfortable… these are safety tips I always live by on SOLO road trips especially!

... Read moreEmbarking on a solo road trip can be an incredibly liberating experience, but it's natural to feel a bit apprehensive, especially about unexpected situations. Beyond preparing for serious emergencies like a roadside breakdown, there are so many other ways to ensure your journey is smooth, safe, and enjoyable. These tips go beyond just what to do when things go wrong and focus on proactive measures to prevent a dangerous emergency on a road trip alone. To truly prevent a dangerous emergency on a road trip alone, start with your vehicle. Before I even think about packing, I make sure my car is in tip-top shape. This means checking tire pressure (including the spare!), oil, coolant, and brake fluid. A quick check can save you from a major headache down the line. It's also smart to have basic emergency tools like jumper cables and a flashlight accessible. Another crucial tip for solo travelers is meticulous planning. I always share my detailed itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, including my planned stops and estimated arrival times. And my phone? Always fully charged with a portable power bank! I also download offline maps because cell service can be spotty in remote areas. Knowing your route and having backup navigation can seriously reduce stress if you find yourself lost or in an unfamiliar area. What you pack can make a huge difference in your overall safety and comfort. Beyond the usual clothes, I always include a robust emergency kit: a well-stocked first-aid kit, a bright flashlight, a small toolkit, and plenty of water and non-perishable snacks. You never know when you might face an unexpected delay or a minor issue where these items will be a lifesaver. Having a blanket or sleeping bag for warmth, even in summer, is also a good idea if you get stranded. Don't forget financial safety! I always carry a little cash alongside my cards, and I have a backup card hidden separately. For accommodation, I prefer to book ahead, especially when traveling alone. Reading reviews and looking for places with good lighting and secure parking makes me feel much more at ease. Trust your instincts – if a place feels off, it probably is. While driving, staying aware of your surroundings is key. If a situation or person makes you feel uncomfortable at a gas station or rest stop, trust your gut and move on. I try to make stops during daylight hours in well-lit, populated areas whenever possible. It's all about minimizing potential risks and maximizing your enjoyment, helping you to prevent a dangerous emergency before it even starts. Finally, remember to prioritize your well-being. Get enough rest, stay hydrated, and don't push yourself too hard. Solo travel offers incredible freedom, but it also means you're solely responsible for your own care. By taking these proactive steps, from preventing a dangerous emergency to simply being prepared for the unexpected, you empower yourself to handle anything that comes your way. So, buckle up, stay smart, and savor every moment of your incredible solo adventure!
