My policy clearly states that appointment times are duration estimates and to plan to be in the salon 2–5 hours because I do not rush my work. It also states that The Bam Palace is built on peace, laughter, and good energy and any disrespect or confrontation results in immediate termination of service.
Today, my 1 PM client arrived on time, but I was still wrapping up my 11 AM silk press. The moment she sat in the waiting area, the energy shifted she was breathing hard, visibly irritated, and it threw the whole vibe off. Both me and the client in my chair felt it immediately.
Me and my client were mid conversation when she abruptly interrupted without saying “excuse me,” and said,
“I mean… what time am I gonna be done? I have an appointment at 1, and I need to be somewhere by 3.”
I told her respectfully that I was finishing up and also reminded her that if she had somewhere to be at 3, booking a 1 PM service wasn’t a smart choice. She then made a loud phone call in the waiting area talking about how she “had no choice but to wait for me” because she had plans. That’s not the energy the suite is built on.
At that point, I went and grabbed my coworker to take her as an immediate service, because her appointment with me was terminated. I’m not entertaining that kind of chaos over a silk press.
Before my coworker could even start, she came back into my suite accusing me of being rude. I kindly asked her to step outside. She stood at my door talking loud as if I couldn’t hear so yes, I raised my voice right back. I’m a stylist, but I’m also human. Nobody is going to raise their voice at me and expect me to take it.
Energy matters. Respect matters. My policies exist for a reason.
In the fast-paced beauty industry, respecting appointment policies is crucial not only for time management but also to maintain a calm, welcoming atmosphere. When a client disregards policies they haven't read, it can disrupt the entire salon's energy, as seen in this real-life account of a silk press appointment gone wrong. Effective salons like The Bam Palace emphasize peace, laughter, and good energy, fostering a positive space for clients and stylists alike. Appointment time estimates are provided to help clients plan properly, but they are just that—estimates. Since stylists prioritize quality and thoroughness over rushing, services often take longer than the scheduled slot. Clients with urgent plans should consider booking earlier or allowing extra time to avoid conflicts and stress. Communication between stylists and clients is key; polite reminders about policies and realistic timing help set expectations and prevent frustration on both sides. Respect is another indispensable element within salon interactions. When clients express irritation loudly or disrespectfully, it not only unsettles the stylist but also impacts other clients present. This phenomenon affects service quality because stylists work best in positive environments. If a client acts disruptive or confrontational, salons may suspend or terminate service to protect their professional space and the well-being of others. Stylists are professionals, but they are also human and deserve to be treated with courtesy. It’s important for clients to understand that verbal disrespect or raised voices are unacceptable. Establishing and adhering to clear policies around appointment times and mutual respect helps manage expectations and promotes harmony. In essence, salon visits are a shared experience where energy and respect flow both ways. Clients should approach appointments with understanding, while stylists provide transparency and quality care. This balance creates a satisfying experience for everyone, ensuring that the time spent in the salon is enjoyable and peaceful.
