Hey art lovers! I wanted to chat a bit more about something I'm always trying to improve in my own work: shadows in art. You might have seen my latest OC drawing where I really pushed myself to focus on them, and honestly, it made such a huge difference! For me, understanding how to draw a good shadow isn't just about coloring in the dark parts. It's about bringing life and depth to a flat image. When I started out, my drawings often looked a bit flat. Everything felt like it was floating. But once I started paying close attention to my light source and how it interacts with objects, it was a game-changer. Think about it: a strong light source creates clear cast shadows (the ones an object throws onto a surface) and form shadows (the ones that define the object's own curves and planes). The magic really happens when you start playing with value – how light or dark a shadow is. A soft, diffused light gives you subtle, gradual shadows, while harsh, direct light creates sharp, defined ones with strong contrast. When I'm working on an OC drawing, the shadows are crucial for making my character feel real and grounded in their environment. I always try to imagine where the light is coming from. Is it a bright sun from above? A soft lamp from the side? This helps me figure out where the darkest parts of the shadow will be, where the core shadow lies, and even where some subtle reflected light might bounce back into the darker areas. One tip I learned early on is to observe, observe, observe! Look at everyday objects around you. How do their shadows behave? How do they wrap around a sphere or stretch from a cube? Using reference photos, especially ones with dramatic lighting, has been incredibly helpful for me in understanding the nuances of rendering shadows. Don't be afraid to push the dark values! Sometimes, artists (myself included!) can be a bit timid with their darkest darks, which can make shadows look weak. Bold shadows often lead to more impactful art.
