Know when you’re being manipulated!

2024/11/25 Edited to

... Read moreWow, this post really hit home for me! I've been through so many situations where I wished I had understood this earlier: that actions prove who someone is, not just pretty words. It’s a tough lesson to learn, but once you do, it completely changes how you navigate relationships and protect your energy. Think about it: how many times have you heard a heartfelt apology, only to see the exact same behavior resurface days or weeks later? For a long time, I'd cling to the hope that 'this time' would be different, that their words meant a real change. But what I've realized is that the only true apology is changed behavior. If there's no actual shift in their actions, if the pattern repeats, then it's not a genuine apology – it's often just another form of manipulation. This isn't about being cynical; it's about being discerning. People can say anything to get what they want or to escape accountability. They might promise the world, express deep regret, or even shed tears. But words are cheap. What truly matters is whether their daily conduct reflects a genuine understanding of their impact and a consistent effort to do better. If you don't see any change, that's a huge red flag. It’s straight-up manipulation. Remember that quote: 'Actions prove who someone is, words just prove who they're pretending to be.' It's so true! I remember a friend who constantly promised to be more reliable, but always flaked on plans last minute. Every time I confronted them, I'd get a string of apologies and excuses. For a while, I bought into it. But then I started to pay attention to their actions, or lack thereof. The apologies were just words meant to smooth things over, not a commitment to actual change. Recognizing this helped me set boundaries and eventually, distance myself for my own peace of mind. It was tough, but necessary for my well-being. So, how do you really know the difference? First, observe patterns over time. One slip-up might be an accident, but consistent problematic behavior followed by empty apologies points to a deeper issue. Don't let a brief period of good behavior erase a long history of bad. Second, look for consistency. Do their actions align with their words, not just in the immediate aftermath of a conflict, but consistently moving forward? A true apology will be followed by sustained effort, not just a temporary truce. Third, trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Don't let someone gaslight you into believing you're 'too sensitive' or 'overreacting' when their actions clearly contradict their words. Your intuition is a powerful protector. This principle – that actions prove who someone is – is so powerful because it shifts your focus from what people say to what they *do*. It strips away the pretense and helps you see people for who they truly are. It’s empowering to know the difference and pay attention. Once you start doing this, you'll find yourself making healthier choices about who you let into your inner circle and who deserves your trust. Protecting your peace and emotional well-being starts with recognizing these crucial signs and acting on them. Don't let anyone diminish your worth with empty words; demand and observe genuine change.
