... Read moreStarting a local hardware business in Singapore was no easy feat, especially when it involved risking all the profits from my first successful venture. I remember how everything seemed uncertain—I had just made my first substantial earnings when I poured them back into building Excel Hardware. The story behind it is a mixture of calculated risk and deep knowledge of the hardware industry. One of the biggest challenges was financial pressure. At times, the bank was quite strict; there were moments when I feared losing everything due to banking policies and loan guarantor issues. But instead of stepping back, I saw a chance to pioneer a brand recognized locally for quality and reliability. I focused on creating superior products like hinges, which I knew well from years of experience and understanding customer preferences. Growing the business during the SARS period was particularly tough; sales dropped sharply, and my partner wanted to leave the venture. Losing a partner meant losing a bank guarantor, which tightened access to essential credit facilities. The stress was high. However, I believed in my vision and the potential for growth in Singapore’s hardware market. One thing that kept me grounded was the support from a considerate bank manager who insisted my business get proper insurance. I took this advice seriously, setting up protections early on to safeguard the company from future risks. This proactive step helped stabilize our operations and build trust with clients. What surprised me the most was how doubling the initial product investment—spending $30,000 and turning it to $60,000—showed the market’s demand for quality hardware items. Excel Hardware grew steadily by focusing on quality and understanding user habits. For those new to purchasing hardware, it's vital to seek expert advice—something we offer through personal consultations to prevent buying mistakes. Looking back, the journey taught me resilience and the importance of taking calculated risks to build something meaningful. If you’re hesitant about where to start with hardware products or fear making the wrong choices, I highly recommend consulting professionals who know the ins and outs of this industry. That's how we built our brand and how you can save time, money, and avoid frustration.
