Curly girl method 🫶

When I first heard about the Curly Girl Method (CGM), I was a bit overwhelmed. It seemed like a whole new world of hair care! But trust me, diving into it has been a game-changer for my fine, thick curls. The CGM basically means ditching harsh sulfates, silicones, waxes, and drying alcohols to truly embrace your natural curl pattern and encourage healthy, happy hair. Understanding your hair's unique characteristics is truly the first step to success. Beyond just knowing if you have fine hair or thick curls, delving into porosity was a revelation for me. Like many, I initially thought all curly hair needed heavy creams to stay moisturized. But once I realized I had low porosity hair, everything clicked. If your hair takes a long time to get fully wet, struggles to absorb products, and tends to get product buildup easily, you might have low porosity like me. This means your hair cuticles are tightly closed, making it harder for moisture to penetrate. For us low porosity gals, the key is using lightweight, water-based products that can actually get into the hair shaft without just sitting on top. Think milks, mousses, and gels rather than thick butters for styling. I've found that applying products to soaking wet hair helps a lot too! On the flip side, high porosity hair has more open cuticles, absorbs products quickly, and often needs more moisture and heavier creams to seal it in. A typical CGM routine often involves co-washing (conditioning wash) or using a sulfate-free cleanser, then conditioning, and finally styling. For me, with my fine hair, I can get weighed down easily, so I often opt for a low-lather shampoo every few washes to ensure my scalp is clean. Detangling gently with a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in is absolutely crucial to prevent breakage. After rinsing, I scrunch in a light leave-in conditioner or curl milk, followed by a gel. The 'squish to condish' method has been amazing for encouraging my thick curls to clump beautifully and absorb moisture. When it comes to styling, less is often more for fine, low porosity hair. I focus on even distribution of a small amount of product. After applying, I scrunch gently with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to remove excess water and help form the curl pattern. Then, I diffuse on low heat and low speed, or air dry, making sure not to touch my hair until it's completely dry to avoid frizz. Once dry, I 'scrunch out the crunch' from the gel cast to reveal soft, defined curls. This method really helps my fine hair achieve volume without being weighed down. Finding the right products is a journey, but look for ingredients like aloe vera, glycerin (used sparingly if it's humid), and lightweight oils like jojoba or grapeseed. Avoid heavy oils and butters in your regular routine if you have low porosity, as they can cause buildup. Always check labels for silicones, sulfates, and drying alcohols! Embracing the Curly Girl Method has truly transformed my hair. It takes patience to understand what your unique curls need, but once you do, the results are so rewarding.
