How and what is a witches broom
A witch’s broom—often called a besom—is a traditional magical tool with deep symbolic and practical roots. Its origin blends folklore and historical practice: in medieval Europe, brooms were associated with domestic life and women’s work, but in folk magic they took on a protective and purifying role. Early depictions from the 15th century and earlier show witches riding brooms, a symbol that combined fertility rites, shamanic “flying” journeys, and the liminal ability to cross between worlds.
Purpose: Traditionally, witches use the broom to cleanse and consecrate a space before rituals or spellwork. This is not for physical sweeping, but for energetically “sweeping away” negativity, stagnant energy, and harmful influences. Besoms are also hung above doors or placed by hearths as protective charms.
Symbolism: The handle (usually wood like ash or oak) represents the masculine, and the bristles (often birch or broomcorn) represent the feminine; together, they embody balance and unity. Over time, the broom became a powerful emblem of witchcraft, transformation, and protection.
