IKEA TARVA Dresser Makeover

OMG, you guys! I'm still pinching myself over how this IKEA TARVA dresser makeover turned out. What started as a 'happy accident' with a design idea I didn't initially plan, ended up being my favorite DIY project ever! If you’re eyeing a Tarva dresser hack, trust me, you can totally do this. First things first, prep is key! Even though the TARVA dresser is raw pine, a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (like 180-220 grit) really helps the primer stick. I used Zinsser primer, which is a lifesaver for getting good paint adhesion and blocking any tannins from the wood. Don't skip this step if you want your paint job to last! For the checkerboard top, I cut wooden squares measuring 3” x 3¼”. This part was surprisingly fun! I laid them out first to make sure my pattern was even before using Liquid Nail adhesive to secure them. Make sure to apply even pressure and let it dry completely – patience is a virtue in DIY! The OCR image shows how neatly these squares can transform the top drawers into a chic checkered design. Now, about the color! I went with Gladiador Gray by Behr, and it’s just this perfect greenish-gray that feels so sophisticated. If you're wondering about other colors, the beauty of an IKEA TARVA hack is you can paint it any shade your heart desires! Imagine a bold navy, a soft pastel pink (hello, 'pink chest of drawers' inspiration!), or even a rich emerald green. A small roller (3-inch is perfect for smooth coverage) and a small brush for corners will be your best friends here. For the bottom drawers, I used Pole Wrap panels to give them that cool, ribbed look you see in the 'FINAL RESULT' image. It adds so much texture and warmth! You could also try fluted molding or even just a different paint color for contrast. One thing I'm still debating are the handles for the upper drawers. The OCR mentions me pointing to the top drawer, still deciding. Knobs or pulls? Gold, black, or leather? It’s tough! What do you guys think? This project truly transformed a basic piece into something unique, perfectly fitting under my TV with some pretty flowers on top, just like the finished image shows. It's proof that a little creativity and some DIY effort can turn an affordable IKEA piece into custom furniture!
