Bad Memory Problems

“Huh, when did you say that…?”

“When did I learn that…?”

If you find yourself frequently forgetting something, you are definitely not alone. As the busyness of life catches up with us and we get distracted by other things, we often find that we cannot remember something, even if it is something that we heard or learned just hours ago.

- THE FORGETTING CURVE -

The new information we learn is stored in our short-term memory. It only moves to our long-term memory when we consciously review and recall it.

- SPACED REPETITION -

To improve our memory retention, we need to actively retrieve the information. This process flattens the forgetting curve, such that there is a slower decay of our stored information.

We can refresh our knowledge at fixed intervals first, before reinforcing the memory by increasing the interval duration.

Know anyone who has a poor memory or someone who keeps forgetting whatever you tell them?

Try the spaced repetition method so that they can work their brain. Each attempt at recalling the information is a ‘rep’ for their brain.

... Read moreMany of us experience moments where we forget important details, even things we just heard. This happens because our brains store new information initially in short-term memory, which can quickly fade without reinforcement. The concept of the forgetting curve explains this rapid decline, showing how much information can be lost over time when not actively reviewed. To combat this, the spaced repetition technique is highly effective. It involves reviewing information at increasing intervals—starting from an hour after learning, then a few hours later, the next day, and so on. This method actively engages your brain, strengthening the neural pathways and flattening the forgetting curve, which slows down memory decay. Personally, integrating spaced repetition into my learning habits transformed how I retain knowledge. For example, when studying new financial concepts, I would revisit the material multiple times throughout the day following these intervals. Over time, less frequent reviews were needed because the information had moved securely into my long-term memory. Think of your brain like a muscle that gets stronger with regular exercise. Each time you recall information, it's like a rep in a workout session that enhances your memory's endurance. This approach is especially beneficial in busy lifestyles where distractions can cause forgetfulness. Using tools like flashcards, reminder apps, or even simple scheduled self-quizzes can help implement spaced repetition easily. Encouraging friends or family members who often forget things to try this method can also be a supportive way to improve their memory. It’s a simple strategy with powerful results, applicable to learning anything from daily tasks to complex subjects. Ultimately, by consciously practicing spaced repetition, you can retain important knowledge longer and reduce the frustration of forgetfulness in everyday life.
