BSWM: Matthew part 5
Let’s look at Matthew 10
In Mathew 10 we see Jesus establish his 12 disciples they are
Simon(who later becomes Peter)
His brother Andrew
James and John the sons of Zebedee
Philip
Bartholomew
Thomas
Matthew
James son of Alphaeus
Thaddaeus
Simon
Judas.
He sends them out to do mission work- and gives specific instructions to them on where to go, what to take and how to handle persecution.
10:1-4 He gives them specific Authorities to cast our demons and heal the sick just as he has done. Demonstrating that through faith in Jesus we also can have that same authority.
The 12 are listed and Matthew himself calls himself the Tax collector- giving notice of his past. Showing how Jesus calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things in his name.
In verses 5-15 Jesus gives the specific instructions for how they are to go out into the land of Israel.
He tells them to travel extremely light- with no bags or money or extra clothes. Which calls on the 12 to depend solely on their faith in God and Jesus to provide for their every need.
They are told that if any town does not accept them they are to rub the dust off their sandles and go on their way. This is a symbolic gesture of judgement, but also a powerful lesson in letting God be in control of situations.
By walking away- they are not only showing obedience but they are also willfully giving over control to God to handle.
16-33
Talks about how they will face persecution for coming in Jesus name. They are told not to worry because they will have the Holy Spirit speak through them. And to stand firm in their faith. He goes on to remind them of their value. Saying how each hair on their head is counted for.
This is important because he is showing with them how much he loves them- even in the face of hardship that they will face he still stands with them and loves them through it all.
He calls for boldness of confession! And touches on themes of eternal perspectives. Looking at the soul which is saved and is eternal. While the body is mortal.
In 34-39 he challenges relationships. Showing how true discipleship comes at a cost- but you must be willing to sacrifice relationships for the only relationship that matters which is with Jesus.
And lastly we see Jesus talk about eternal reward. He takes note of every small act and sees every kindness given to his disciples. That those who give freely on top others will see a reward in heaven.
There is a lot of unpack here. Matthew 10 in my opinion is the most applicable part of the whole book of Matthew. Because it directly relates to us today as we serve the lord.
It’s a reminder and an encouragement to keep going in good works and faith even when we are persecuted against.
He reminds us of our value and how important it is to rely on him fully in our times of need to be the provider.
And he uplifts us by helping us to think of an eternal kingdom not a mortal earthy one. But keeping our eyes set on heaven we can escape fear and be bold in who Christ calls us to be!
Prayer:
Thank you Jesus for giving me the time today to spend with you and worship you. I pray that this message of hope reaches who you need it to reach. And I thank you for giving me deeper understanding of your word each and every time I read it.
In your name Amen. 🙏 #knowingbible #bibleready #biblestudynotes #biblechat #christian
