Matthew 6:16-18 Teaching About Fasting ✨🫶✨

✨New Living Translation Bible

✨New Testament

✨Meaning: Fasting involves abstaining from food for the purpose of religious reflection and devotion. Don’t be like hypocrites and make your fasting know to others through your appearance or lack of hygiene. Jesus instructs the disciples to maintain their personal appearance so that no one but God will know of their fasting.

... Read moreMy journey into understanding biblical fasting truly began when I realized it's so much more than just skipping meals. For a long time, I thought fasting meant looking visibly pious or making a grand show of my sacrifice. But then, delving into Matthew 6:16-18 completely shifted my perspective. Jesus' words about not being like the 'hypocrites' who make themselves look 'miserable and disheveled' to be admired for their fasting hit home. It's not about public display; it's a deeply personal act between you and God, a secret devotion that fosters a stronger connection. Beyond just this passage, I've explored other New Testament examples of fasting. Jesus himself fasted for 40 days, setting an incredible precedent. The early church in the book of Acts also fasted when making important decisions, like commissioning Paul and Barnabas for missionary work or appointing elders. This showed me that fasting isn't just about seeking something from God, but also about seeking His will and spiritual clarity in critical moments. It's a way to humble ourselves and sharpen our spiritual senses. There are also different 'types of fasting' implied in the Bible. While abstaining from food is the most common, sometimes it's a partial fast, like Daniel's fast (though primarily Old Testament, the principle of abstaining from certain foods for spiritual focus applies). Other times, it might even be a fast from certain activities, entertainment, or even social media to create more space for prayer and scripture reading. The core principle remains devotion and drawing closer to God, intentionally removing distractions to focus on Him alone. This private discipline helps us understand 'what does fasting teach us' – it teaches self-control, reliance on God, and often deepens our prayer life in profound ways. One question I often had was, 'is it a sin to break a fast?' I've learned that God looks at our hearts and our intentions. If you genuinely feel unwell, have a medical condition, or a sincere, unforeseen reason to break it, it's not a sin. The goal is connection and spiritual growth, not legalism or self-punishment. God's grace always covers us. The beauty of 'fasting in private' is that it removes the pressure of external expectations, allowing for true sincerity. When I embark on a fast, I find it incredibly helpful to have 'bible passages to read when fasting.' Beyond Matthew 6, I love passages in Isaiah 58, which speaks powerfully about the true fast that pleases God – one that involves justice, compassion, and caring for others. Verses in Psalm 35, Joel 2, and even specific prayers from Daniel or Nehemiah can provide profound guidance and encouragement. These scriptures help keep my focus on the spiritual purpose rather than just the physical act of abstaining. Ultimately, biblical fasting, done with a humble heart and pure intention, is a powerful tool for spiritual growth, drawing us closer to God's heart and His purposes for our lives.
