Learned to change the way I warm up before the gym.

2025/11/11 Edited to

... Read moreWarming up before a workout isn't just about moving your body; it's about activating the right muscles to prepare them for exercise. Often, some muscles remain inactive or underutilized, causing other muscles to work harder to compensate. This imbalance can lead to inefficient movements and even injury. To optimize your warm-up, focus on consciously contracting specific muscles. Your physical therapist might explain this concept by saying that your brain doesn't always know to activate some muscles unless you deliberately engage them. By flexing and contracting these muscles during your warm-up, you teach your nervous system to recruit them properly. For example, if certain stabilizing muscles around your joints aren't engaging, other muscles may overwork, leading to fatigue and possible strain. Activating these stabilizers through targeted warm-up exercises like glute bridges or scapular retractions ensures a balanced workload. Incorporate activation drills that involve controlled, deliberate muscle contractions before jumping into intense workouts. This approach not only enhances your muscle coordination but also improves your overall workout effectiveness and reduces the risk of injury. Next time you prepare for the gym, spend extra time focusing on contracting the muscles consciously rather than just going through repetitive movements.

the most important thing i’ve learned in my 20’s 🫶
pain doesn’t ever really go away - you don’t get rid of it, you just make room for it. you allow it to exist in new ways, in its own place, alongside everything else. pain is a catalyst for change - it’s what drives us to action, what drives us to the service of others, what alerts us to things
