I love Black Girl Magic Black History

I recently learned about Sarah Rector, an extraordinary young Black girl whose story truly embodies Black Girl Magic and the spirit of Black History. At just ten years old, Sarah was granted 160 acres of land in Oklahoma from the Creek Nation’s land allotments. Although officials initially thought her land was worthless, oil was discovered on it, propelling her to become one of the youngest Black millionaires in the early 20th century. What makes Sarah’s story even more remarkable is her deal with John D. Rockefeller, one of the most influential oil tycoons of that time. Her intelligence and business acumen at such a young age are truly inspiring. Numerous stories like Sarah’s often go unnoticed, but they highlight the tremendous contributions and resilience of Black individuals, especially young Black girls who defied the odds and shaped history. Growing up, I never heard about figures like Sarah Rector in school, yet her story shines as a beacon of hope and empowerment. It reminds me of how important it is to preserve and share these narratives as part of Black History Month and beyond. They show that determination, talent, and courage can pave the way for incredible achievements regardless of age or background.
