I never wanted to be an animator

Transitioning careers is often seen as a setback, but it can be the gateway to newfound passion and success. In my personal experience, I initially set my sights on becoming a storyboard artist, carefully curating my portfolio and network to fit that niche. However, when industry shutdowns disrupted plans, I was forced to pivot unexpectedly into motion design. Despite initial resistance—because I didn’t envision myself as an animator—I found that my storyboard skills enriched my understanding of story arcs, composition, and editing, making my new role deeply rewarding. What struck me most is how related skills in the animation field can complement each other. Storyboarding might be preproduction, but it sharpens your storytelling instincts which are invaluable in postproduction roles like motion design and video editing. Over time, my confidence grew as I worked on commercials and ads for global brands, proving to myself that stepping outside original plans can uncover talents and career paths I hadn’t anticipated. For anyone feeling stuck or disheartened by a detour in their professional journey, remember: career trajectories are rarely linear. Embracing change, even when it's unplanned, can lead to opportunities that align better with your evolving interests and strengths. The animation industry offers diverse roles beyond what we often imagine, from illustration and storyboard to motion design and editing. Flexibility and openness to learn can convert challenges into fulfilling achievements. Ultimately, your first choice isn’t your forever choice, and that’s perfectly okay. Growth means evolving goals and discovering new talents. As the saying goes, "change is the only constant," and sometimes the path you didn’t plan turns out to be the perfect fit in the wider career puzzle.
