I know exactly why I'm in debt
I think a lot of people assume debt comes from being careless or irresponsible.
For me, it came from a series of choices - some hard, some meaningful, and some I'd probably still make again.
I'm working on it, but I'm also not pretending it happened for no reason.
Curious - what's something "expensive " in your life that you don't regret?
Debt is often misunderstood as a result of poor financial habits, but my experience shows it can stem from deeply personal and meaningful life choices. For example, going through two divorces was not only emotionally taxing but also financially draining — something I wouldn’t recommend, yet it shaped who I am today. Raising a child involved many expenses, especially with participation in sports and music programs, which I viewed as important for character building. While those costs added up, I never regretted investing in my child’s growth. Choosing a career in teaching came with its own financial sacrifices. Teaching is fulfilling and meaningful work, but it doesn't pay well. Despite this, I find value in the career that transcends the paycheck. Balancing these realities, I still allow myself occasional vacations — even if my budget suggests otherwise — because living means enjoying moments beyond financial stress. My story highlights how debt can be linked to real life choices rather than irresponsibility. Recognizing the reasons behind financial struggles is essential for managing them effectively and finding peace with past decisions. For others in similar situations, it's important to identify which expenses are truly valuable to your life and which can be adjusted. Sharing experiences and embracing a mindful approach to spending helps create a healthier financial and emotional outlook.
