Favorite place on earth: Kauai

Okay, so you're planning your dream trip to Kauai and want to make sure you hit all the absolute must-dos for a truly memorable vacation. I totally get it! Beyond the main attractions, I’ve got some extra insights and a few more recommendations from my recent visit that truly elevated my experience on Hawaii’s Garden Isle. First off, let's talk about Waimea Canyon, often called the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific.' It’s breathtaking, but my best tip is to drive all the way up to the Pu'u o Kila Lookout. While the main lookout is great, Pu'u o Kila offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Kalalau Valley and the Na Pali Coast from above. Go early in the morning, ideally before 9 AM, to avoid the clouds that often roll in later, obscuring those spectacular vistas. Dress in layers; it can get surprisingly cool at the higher elevations! Then there’s the iconic Na Pali Coast. While a helicopter tour (like the one over Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as Jurassic Falls, which is an absolute thrill!) gives you an incredible aerial perspective, experiencing the Na Pali Coast from the ground or sea is a must too. If you’re up for a challenge, hiking a portion of the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach or Falls is an unforgettable adventure – just remember to secure your permits well in advance, as they're limited and sell out quickly! If hiking isn't your thing, a catamaran or zodiac boat tour along the coast offers stunning views and often includes snorkeling stops. For pure relaxation and classic Hawaiian beauty, Hanalei Bay on the North Shore is my happy place. I loved starting my mornings here with a kayak paddle, gliding over the calm waters as the majestic mountains reflected on the surface. Later in the day, it's perfect for simply lounging on the golden sands, enjoying the gentle waves, and soaking in the serene atmosphere. Catching a sunset here is also non-negotiable; the colors are out of this world. Beyond these incredible spots, I’d highly recommend dedicating a day to exploring the South Shore around Poipu. Poipu Beach is fantastic for snorkeling, and I spotted several sea turtles just cruising in the clear waters – definitely a highlight! And don't miss the Spouting Horn blowhole; it's a quick, fun stop where ocean water shoots dramatically into the air through a natural lava tube. It’s a great way to see a different side of Kauai’s diverse landscape. Kauai truly offers a blend of adventure, beauty, and tranquility.
