Togakushi ⛩️: Japan’s most magical shrine path

This place was gorgeous and a must visit in Nagano!

There are actually five different shrines scattered around the mountain.

The most famous is the Upper Shrine, where you walk through the tall cedar trees. Absolutely magical.

How much walking? 🚶

Lower → Middle Shrine: about 20 mins, nice and easy.

Middle → Upper Shrine: 30–40 mins, uphill with stone steps (prepare to sweat a little).

Whole loop (all 5 shrines): 2–3 hours if you’re up for it.

I recommend middle shrine -> lunch - > hike or take bus to upper shrine (ok to skip the hike, nothing much) then explore upper shrine (40 mins walk in to main shrine)

Lunch: literally any soba noodles shop is good!

... Read moreTogakushi Shrine isn’t just one spot but a fascinating collection of five separate shrines nestled across the mountain, each with unique historical and spiritual features. The Cedar Avenue leading to the Upper Shrine is considered a key structural marvel—thousands of ancient cedar trees line the path, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere that many visitors find deeply moving. If you’re planning your visit, it’s good to note how the trail is organized. The full circuit covers about 2 to 3 hours on foot, perfect if you want a complete experience. The segment from the Middle Shrine to the Upper Shrine is the most physically demanding, featuring uphill stone steps that can be slippery or steep in places. Wearing sturdy footwear and preparing for a sweat-inducing climb is recommended. For those interested in botanical beauty, the nearby Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden offers a serene spot to explore diverse local flora, adding another dimension to your visit beyond the shrines themselves. A valuable tip is to combine exploration with enjoying local cuisine. Togakushi is famous for its soba noodles, and just about any soba shop along your route offers a warm, hearty meal—perfect after your hike. The shrine complex also includes historically notable locations like the 宝光社 (Hōkōsha), which plays an important role in regional religious traditions. Visitors often find the blend of spiritual, natural, and historic elements offers a truly immersive experience. If you prefer an easier approach, consider taking the bus from the Middle to the Upper Shrine area to avoid the steeper hike and still enjoy the magical cedar path nearby. Exploring Togakushi Shrine in April can be especially pleasant as the weather softens, the forest is lush, and there are fewer crowds, allowing for a more intimate encounter with Japan’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
