What I Eat in a Day- Daniel Fast (Vegan) Edition
Hi Friends!
Spring has finally sprung and I’ve definitely been in need of a reset. God recently led me to do a Daniel fast for the first three weeks of the month and it’s been an incredible experience. I’ve done versions of this fast before but never for this long. I can already feel an increase in energy and clarity and it’s helped my prayer life so much.
There are a bunch of things I can’t eat so I’ve had to get a little creative with making delicious meals.
Meal 1- Brown rice, spinach stew, air fryer plantains and steamed broccoli
Meal 2-Okra and Tomato sauce with a wild rice mix
Meal 3- Red lentil pasta (was not a fan lol) with mushroom, spinach and steamed broccoli
Meal 4- Garlic potatoes, avocado, tomato and cucumber salad and steamed broccoli
Let me know if there are any other recipes you would like me to try or if you’ve ever done a Daniel Fast. @Lemon8 Food

Hey everyone! Following up on my Daniel Fast journey, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some of the questions I often get, especially around what you can actually eat and how it compares to a regular vegan diet. For me, this fast was a powerful spiritual reset, and while challenging at times, the clarity and energy I gained were truly incredible. It really pushes you to be creative in the kitchen! Let's talk about the food list because that's usually the first question. The core idea is to eat foods found in nature. So, think fruits (all kinds!), vegetables (fresh or frozen, like my beloved spinach and broccoli), whole grains (brown rice, wild rice, oats, quinoa), beans and legumes (lentils, black beans, chickpeas), nuts and seeds (unsalted, raw), and water as your primary beverage. It's truly amazing how satisfying simple meals like my brown rice with spinach stew and air-fried plantains can be when you focus on these wholesome ingredients. Now, for the 'not allowed' list, which can sometimes be tricky. This includes meat and dairy (obviously aligns with veganism!), sweeteners (no sugar, honey, agave), leavened bread, refined grains (white bread, white pasta), solid fats (margarine, shortening), fried foods, and any beverages other than water. This is where the Daniel Fast differs significantly from a general vegan diet. Many vegan products, like some plant-based milks or desserts, often contain sweeteners or oils that wouldn't be compliant. A common question I get is about plant-based meats or vegan meat substitutes like Beyond Meat or Impossible Meat. While they are vegan, they typically contain processed ingredients, oils, and sometimes even added sugars, which go against the spirit of the Daniel Fast. My personal approach was to stick to whole, unprocessed plant proteins. For instance, instead of a veggie burger, I'd load up on lentils, black beans, or mushrooms in my meals. My wild rice mix with okra and tomato sauce was incredibly flavorful and filling without any substitutes. Another popular query is about vegan cheese. Like plant-based meats, most vegan cheeses are processed and contain oils that aren't allowed. Instead, I found nutritional yeast to be a fantastic way to add a cheesy, savory flavor to dishes like my red lentil pasta with mushrooms and spinach—just sprinkle it on! So, is the Daniel Fast vegan? Yes, in essence, it's a very strict form of veganism, but with additional restrictions on processed foods, sweeteners, and certain oils. It's more about spiritual discipline through dietary purity than just avoiding animal products. It's not about finding vegan alternatives to non-compliant foods; it's about embracing whole, natural foods. If you're looking for easy Daniel Fast recipes, my daily meals are a great starting point. Try combining a whole grain like brown rice or quinoa with a hearty vegetable stew. Garlic potatoes with a fresh avocado, tomato, and cucumber salad make for a refreshing and satisfying meal. You'll be amazed at the variety and deliciousness you can find within these guidelines! It's all about getting creative with the incredible bounty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains available to us.
