Chamomile harvesting

One of my biggest hauls this summer was Chamomile! The plants I planted just keep producing!

I will wait until I have a bunch on each plant with the centers turned yellow. Then, I wash them slightly and dry them off on a paper towel. Lastly, I set my oven to about 170 to 180 degrees for drying them out.

I have been storing all the dried flowers in a mason jar for my morning tea. Unless it’s a placebo effect, it has really helped to regulate my intestines. Kinda TMI but who cares

... Read moreChamomile harvesting is a rewarding gardening activity, especially during the summer months when the plants flourish and bloom abundantly. Timing is essential for optimal harvest; the best moment to pick chamomile flowers is when the white petals start to curl back and the centers turn a rich yellow, indicating full maturity and highest potency. After harvesting, gently rinse the chamomile flowers to remove any dirt or insects. Carefully pat them dry on a paper towel to avoid moisture that can lead to mold during storage. For drying, using an oven set between 170 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended as it preserves the delicate aroma and therapeutic properties. Once thoroughly dried, chamomile flowers can be stored in airtight containers such as mason jars. Keeping them in a cool, dark place helps maintain freshness and potency over time. Chamomile tea, brewed from these dried flowers, has been traditionally used for its calming effects on the digestive system and may assist in regulating intestinal health. In addition to its digestive benefits, chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild sedative properties, making it popular for reducing anxiety and promoting restful sleep. Incorporating homegrown chamomile into your daily routine can offer a natural and soothing alternative to commercial herbal blends. For gardeners in regions like Pennsylvania, chamomile grows well in full sun and well-drained soil, thriving with minimal maintenance. Regular harvesting encourages continuous blooming throughout the growing season, ensuring a plentiful supply for tea and other uses. By harvesting and preparing chamomile correctly, enthusiasts can enjoy the full benefits of this versatile herb while adding a personal touch to their herbal tea collection.
