🤔🧐How many cats is too many cats??

All my life I have been told that I can’t have as many cats as I want. Well, why the heck not?!

Having 5 cats, I have learned “why the heck not” is the upkeep. Feeding all 5, as they swarm me in front of the Keurig. Cleaning all the litter boxes every day and refilling them with fresh litter.

It’s not easy being a cat mom.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how many cats is too many, the answer often depends on factors such as your living space, your budget, and the time you can dedicate to each pet. One of the biggest considerations is the daily upkeep. Feeding several cats means managing different dietary needs and ensuring everyone gets enough food without overeating. Cats can be quite social around feeding time, and it’s common for them to gather enthusiastically, creating a lively, and sometimes chaotic, scene. Litter box maintenance is another crucial part of multi-cat care. The general rule of thumb is to have one litter box per cat, plus one extra, to prevent territorial disputes and maintain hygiene. Cleaning these boxes daily and frequently refreshing the litter is essential to avoid odors and keep your cats happy. Health and vet care also multiply with the number of cats. Vaccinations, flea control, and regular health check-ups can become costly and time-consuming. Yet these are critical to prevent the spread of illness and maintain a healthy furry family. Social dynamics among cats are another factor. Each cat has its personality, and some may not get along in a confined space. Ensuring enough space, providing vertical zones like cat trees, and plenty of playtime can help alleviate stress and foster harmony. Ultimately, being a cat mom or dad to multiple cats is a full-time commitment, requiring patience, love, and practical organization. But the companionship, entertainment, and affection these furry friends provide more than make up for the extra effort. If you’re considering adding another feline friend, assess your resources carefully and prepare to embrace the delightful challenge of a multi-cat household.
