Romans 7:18-19

Romans 7:18-19 says, “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.”

‭Due to our first parents, we are sinful as humans. Though we want to do good, we can’t. We do the very evil that we try so hard not to.

This shows us that nothing good dwells in us. All the good that we have ever done or ever will do comes from the Father. It is only through Him that we are able to overcome our fleshly desires. As we grow closer to God, the fruits of the spirit that He places within us grows even more.

As you start your day and meditate on this, remember to keep God in your minds so that He may do good through us.

... Read moreUnderstanding Romans 7:18-19 isn't just about a theological concept; it's about deeply connecting with the human experience, and especially Paul's own raw honesty. When I first read these verses, I always wondered, "How could someone as devoted as Paul feel such an intense inner conflict?" It truly highlights that even the most spiritual among us grapple with imperfections. Paul wasn't just stating a fact; he was expressing a profound personal struggle: 'For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.' This isn't just a verse; it's a window into the perpetual battle between our intentions and our actions. It makes me reflect on how often I've felt that same pull. I set out to be patient, to be kind, to avoid judgment, yet somehow, the 'evil' I don't want to do creeps in. This is where the profound truth, perhaps ironically captured in the phrase, 'At the center of sin is "i"', truly hits home. It's about our inherent self-focus, our fallen nature, that makes us prone to stray, even when our spirit genuinely desires to do God's will. Our 'flesh'—that part of us that resists God's leading—is constantly at odds with the 'spirit.' Paul himself admits that 'nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.' This isn’t a statement of hopelessness, but a foundational truth that sets the stage for grace. It's recognizing that we cannot, through sheer willpower alone, overcome our sinful tendencies. So, if Paul, a pillar of faith, openly admitted this internal war, what hope is there for us? This is where the power of divine intervention comes in. The article beautifully touches on this: 'All the good that we have ever done or ever will do comes from the Father.' For me, this means shifting my focus from my own limited abilities to God's unlimited power. It's about acknowledging my weakness and inviting His strength to work through me. It's not about trying harder in my own strength, but surrendering more deeply to His. Practically, this looks like a daily commitment to leaning on Him. When I feel that familiar tug towards impatience or negativity, instead of trying to suppress it on my own, I try to pause and ask for God's Spirit to guide my thoughts and actions. It's about cultivating the 'fruits of the spirit' – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control – not as a list of tasks to accomplish, but as an overflow of connecting more deeply with God. As I spend time in prayer, meditation, and reading His word, I find that my desires slowly but surely begin to align more closely with His. It's a continuous process, not a one-time fix. This understanding of Romans 7:18-19 gives me immense comfort and hope. It reminds me that my struggles are not unique, and I'm not alone in them. More importantly, it points me to the ultimate solution: God's unfailing grace and the power of His Spirit within me. It’s a liberation from the impossible burden of trying to be 'good enough' on my own, and an invitation to live a life empowered by something far greater than myself. Every day is an opportunity to let His good work shine through my imperfections.
