Shanita wrapped both hands around the warm mug, but her fingers still trembled. She glanced out the café window like she expected to see him standing across the street.
“I left him alone and he still bothering me,” Shanita sighed as she sat at the café sipping her tea.
“How is he still bothering you?” Neisha asked.
Shanita leaned in, lowering her voice. “Because somehow… he always knows where I’m at.”
Neisha frowned. “What you mean knows where you at?”
“I mean exactly that.” Shanita swallowed hard. “I moved into my own penthouse three weeks ago. Didn’t tell nobody but the leasing office, my mama, and you.”
Neisha’s face tightened. “And?”
“And last night…” Shanita’s eyes flickered toward the window again. “I got home around eleven. The city was quiet, elevator ride smooth, everything normal. I walked into my penthouse, kicked my heels off, poured a glass of wine…”
She paused.
“And there was music playing.”
Neisha sat up straighter. “What?”
“Soft jazz.” Shanita’s voice dropped to a whisper. “I know for a fact I cut everything off before I left that morning.”
A chill crawled over Neisha’s skin. “Girl, stop playing.”
“I’m not playing.” Shanita set her cup down so hard the spoon rattled. “Then I looked on my kitchen island…”
Neisha stared. “What was on it?”
Shanita’s lips parted slowly. “A single black gift box. With a note.”
Neisha’s eyes widened. “What the note say?”
Shanita looked away, jaw tightening. “It said… Pretty views. But you still can’t hide from me.”
For a second, the sounds of the café seemed to disappear.
Neisha snatched Shanita’s wrist. “Tell me you called the police.”
“I did.” Shanita let out a bitter laugh. “They came, looked around, said there was no sign of forced entry.”
“No sign?”
Shanita nodded. “My door was still locked. Balcony locked too. Security downstairs said nobody suspicious came in.”
Neisha shook her head. “That don’t even make sense.”
“That’s what scared me.” Shanita’s voice cracked. “Because if he got in there… that means he either got a key…”
“Or somebody let him in,” Neisha finished grimly.
Shanita’s stomach twisted. “Exactly.”
Neisha looked around the café carefully now, eyes scanning every face. “You sure he the one did it?”
Shanita hesitated. “I was.”
Neisha’s brows pulled together. “Was?”
Shanita reached into her purse and slid her phone across the table. On the screen was a picture of the note sitting beside the black box.
Neisha looked at it, confused. “Okay…”
“Open the next picture.”
Neisha swiped. Her breath caught. Inside the black gift box was a delicate diamond anklet—Shanita’s diamond anklet. The one she’d lost over a year ago.
“The one from Malik’s birthday trip to Miami?” Neisha whispered.
Shanita nodded slowly. “The same one.”
Neisha’s voice dropped. “But that was before Darren.”
“Exactly.” Shanita’s eyes turned cold. “Darren couldn’t have had that anklet.”
A silence fell between them, heavy and suffocating.
Neisha looked up. “So if it wasn’t Darren…”
“Then somebody from before him is watching me too.” Shanita’s voice was barely above a whisper.
Neisha’s chair scraped the floor as she leaned in. “Shanita… how many men done had access to you like that?”
Shanita gave her a look. “Enough to know this ain’t random.”
Her phone buzzed in her hand.
Both women froze.
Shanita looked down at the screen, and all the color drained from her face.
Neisha grabbed her arm. “Who is it?”
Shanita didn’t answer. She just turned the phone so Neisha could see.

A text message glowed across the screen:
Enjoying tea with Neisha? Don’t look behind you.
Neisha’s breath hitched. “Oh my God…”
