White DressDark Truths…. Part 1
Simone didn’t smile when the judge said “congratulations.”
Not fully.
Her hand stayed in Devin’s, but her fingers weren’t relaxed—they were tight, like she was holding onto something that could slip at any second. The courthouse hallway buzzed with people moving in and out, but it all felt distant, muffled, like sound underwater.
Devin noticed first.
“You good?” he asked quietly, leaning closer as they stepped aside near the wall.
Simone nodded too fast. “Yeah. I’m good.”
But her eyes weren’t on him.
They kept drifting toward the glass doors.
Waiting.
For what, she didn’t say.
Devin followed her gaze anyway.
That’s when he saw him.
A man standing outside the courthouse steps, still as stone, dressed in a dark suit like he belonged there—but not for a wedding. Not for celebration. His hands were in his pockets, head slightly tilted, watching the building like he already knew exactly who was inside.
Devin’s jaw tightened. “Who that?”
Simone didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
The man outside finally moved. One step forward. Then another. Slow. Intentional. Like he wasn’t in a hurry because he knew nobody was going anywhere.
Simone exhaled sharply through her nose, as if bracing herself.
“Devin…” she said low, warning in her voice now.
But it was too late.
The courthouse doors opened behind them.
And a voice called out—calm, steady, almost amused.
“So this what we doing now?”
Devin turned slightly.
The man from outside was inside now.
Close enough for Devin to see the faint scar along his eyebrow… and the way Simone’s entire posture changed the moment he spoke.
Devin’s grip tightened.
“Simone,” the man said, eyes locked on her ring finger, then Devin’s hand holding hers. “You didn’t even wait a full week.”
Silence swallowed the hallway.
Simone finally looked at Devin, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I told you… he wasn ’t gone.”
