Dead Before Dawn
Trinity slowed her pace as she rounded the bend of the trail. The morning had been quiet up until then—the only sounds were her sneakers hitting the pavement and the music humming through her earbuds.
Something caught her eye near a row of overgrown bushes.
At first, she thought it was just another pile of illegally dumped trash. Black garbage bags littered the area all the time. She almost kept jogging.
Almost.
But there was something strange about one of the bags.
Trinity pulled out an earbud and squinted. Her heartbeat quickened as she took a few cautious steps closer.
“No way…” she whispered.
Sticking out from a tear in the thick black plastic was a foot.
A human foot.
The skin had a sickly purple tint, swollen and motionless. The toenails were painted a bright neon orange that somehow made the sight even more disturbing.
Trinity froze.
Her stomach dropped so fast she thought she might throw up.
For a moment, her brain refused to process what she was seeing. There had to be another explanation. A mannequin. A prank. Anything.
But deep down, she knew.
This wasn’t a joke.
This was a body.
Her breathing became shallow. The world around her suddenly felt too quiet. Even the birds seemed to have stopped singing.
With trembling hands, she fumbled for her phone and dialed 911.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
Trinity swallowed hard, her eyes never leaving the bag.
“I-I think…” Her voice cracked. “I think I found a dead body.”
As she spoke, a gust of wind swept through the trees.
The torn opening in the bag widened.
And Trinity caught a glimpse of something that made her blood run cold.
Wrapped around the ankle was a gold bracelet.
One she had seen before.
On someone she knew.
