Love Cost Me Everything
Barry gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned pale. The city lights blurred past the windows as he sped through the streets.
“Barry, what the hell is wrong with you?” Charity snapped, finally clicking her seatbelt into place. “You driving like somebody after us.”
His jaw clenched.
“Just sit back.”
“No. You got me in this car flying through red lights and won’t tell me where we’re going.”
Barry glanced in the rearview mirror for what felt like the tenth time.
“Barry—”
“I said not right now!”
The sharpness in his voice made Charity jump.
Silence filled the car.
She folded her arms and stared out the window. Something wasn’t right. Barry wasn’t angry.
He was scared.
For the first time, she noticed the sweat beading on his forehead.
“Barry…”
He swallowed hard.
“Did something happen?”
Before he could answer, headlights appeared behind them.
Fast.
Too fast.
The black SUV that had been three cars back suddenly closed the distance.
Barry cursed under his breath.
“What?” Charity asked, turning around.
The SUV swerved into the next lane.
Then matched their speed.
Then another SUV appeared from a side street.
Charity’s stomach dropped.
“Barry…”
His eyes stayed fixed on the road.
“Now you understand why I couldn’t slow down.”
The second SUV accelerated and pulled alongside them.
The passenger window slowly rolled down.
And Charity saw the barrel of a gun pointed directly at their car.
The words barely left Charity’s lips.
“What the fuck you got yourself into?”
Barry’s eyes remained glued to the road.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?” Charity shouted. “Barry, somebody got guns hanging out the damn window!”
The SUV beside them sped forward.
Barry jerked the wheel, cutting through traffic.
Horns blared.
“Barry!”
“Will you shut up for a second and let me think!”
The passenger in the SUV leaned farther out of the window.
A loud crack split the air.
BANG!
The back windshield shattered.
Charity screamed and ducked.
Glass rained down across the seats.
“Oh my God!”
“Get down!” Barry yelled.
Another shot rang out.
BANG!
The bullet struck the rear passenger door.
Charity curled into a ball against the seat.
Her heart hammered so hard she thought she might pass out.
“Barry, they’re trying to kill us!”
“I know!”
“You know?!”
Barry swerved down a side street.
The tires screeched.
For a moment, the SUV behind them disappeared.
Then headlights appeared again.
Closer than before.
“Dammit!” Barry slammed his hand against the steering wheel.
Charity stared at him.
His face had gone pale.
His hands were shaking.
Whatever this was, Barry wasn’t in control of it.
“Tell me the truth,” she said.
“Now.”
Barry hesitated.
Another shot cracked through the night.
Then he finally spoke.
“I owe somebody money.”
Charity blinked.
“How much?”
He didn’t answer.
“Barry.”
Still nothing.
“HOW MUCH?”
“Three hundred thousand.”
The words sucked the air from her lungs.
“What?”
“Three hundred thousand.”
Charity stared at him like she didn’t know who he was anymore.
“You owe somebody three hundred thousand dollars?”
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
“Who?!”
Barry swallowed.
The look on his face made her stomach twist.
“People you don’t want to know.”
The SUV suddenly rammed the back of their car.
BOOM!
The vehicle fishtailed.
Charity screamed as Barry fought to regain control.
The car spun halfway around before straightening out.
Then Barry’s phone began ringing.
The caller ID made his face drain of color.
Charity looked down.
The name on the screen read:
KING.
Barry answered on speaker.
A calm voice filled the car.
“Barry.”
Neither of them spoke.
“Run all you want,” the man said. “But I just saw your little girlfriend’s face.”
Charity froze.
“Now the debt belongs to both of you.”
The line went dead.
And Barry realized this was no longer about money.
It had become personal.
