Blue Lights Dont Blink

The detective didn’t blink at Finley’s sarcasm.

He just slid a small notepad onto the table between their plates like the candles and half-eaten food didn’t matter.

“Finley, we’re not accusing you,” he said flatly. “We’re asking you to clear something up. You were the last person seen with Nadia before she went missing.”

Skylar’s fork paused mid-air.

“Missing?” Skylar repeated, voice tightening.

Finley leaned back in the booth, one arm resting behind Skylar like she owned the space around them, not just the seat.

“That’s funny,” Finley said. “Because Nadia texted me after I left her. So unless the dead are sending messages now, somebody’s lying.”

The second detective stepped closer. “You have proof of that text?”

Finley gave a small, unimpressed laugh. “You really came to ruin my dinner over a phone?”

Skylar set her fork down fully now. “Finley… just show them.”

That’s when the first detective’s tone shifted.

“A woman matching Nadia’s description was found in a body bag behind an abandoned unit off Kent Street.”

Silence hit the table hard.

Even the restaurant noise felt distant.

Finley’s expression didn’t fully change, but Skylar saw it—the slight tightening in her jaw, like something had just gone off in her head that nobody else could hear.

“That’s impossible,” Finley said more quietly now. “I left her alive.”

The detective studied her. “When was the last time you saw her?”

Finley hesitated just a second too long.

“Last night. Around 11:40.”

Skylar turned toward her slowly. “You told me you were with me at midnight.”

A beat.

Finley’s eyes flicked to Skylar.

Then to the detectives.

Then back to Skylar.

“I was,” she said carefully.

The detective didn’t miss the pause. “So which one is it?”

Finley leaned forward, voice lower now. “You’re asking the wrong question.”

The restaurant door chimed again.

Every head turned.

A woman walked in—hood up, movements steady, like she already knew exactly where everyone would be looking.

Skylar’s breath caught.

Because Nadia was supposed to be dead.

The room didn’t react all at once.

At first it was just a few glances—confused, annoyed, impatient.

Then the hood slipped back.

And the entire restaurant shifted.

Nadia stood there like she’d walked out of a different version of the night. No blood, no bruises—just calm eyes scanning the room like she was counting who had already decided she was gone.

Skylar whispered, barely audible. “That’s… her.”

The detectives turned sharply.

Finley didn’t move.

But her hand, still resting near Skylar’s chair, tightened just slightly.

Nadia walked closer, slow and deliberate, until she was standing just a few feet from the table.

“Well,” she said softly, eyes landing on Finley first. “You didn’t look too surprised to see me.”

Finley leaned back, face unreadable. “Because I don’t believe in ghosts.”

A faint smile touched Nadia’s lips. “Good. Then we can skip the dramatics.”

The lead detective stepped forward. “Ma’am, we were just told you were found dead.”

Nadia tilted her head. “By who?”

Silence.

That question hung heavier than the accusation.

Skylar looked between them, unsettled. “Finley… what is going on?”

Finley finally stood up.

Not rushed. Not defensive. Controlled.

She looked at Nadia like she was trying to place a missing piece that refused to fit.

“I left you at 11:40,” Finley said. “You were fine.”

Nadia’s expression didn’t change. “I was never fine.”

The second detective cut in. “Where have you been for the past twenty-four hours?”

Nadia’s gaze drifted past him, almost bored. “Somewhere I wasn’t supposed to be.”

Finley exhaled through her nose, a quiet edge of frustration now slipping in. “This is ridiculous. Someone is setting me up.”

Nadia’s eyes snapped back to hers.

“Oh,” she said. “Now you understand.”

Skylar stood slowly. “Set you up how?”

Nadia took one step closer to the table.

“Because the woman in that body bag?” she said. “Wasn’t me.”

A pause.

“But she was wearing my clothes.”

... Read moreReading this story reminded me of how powerful suspense and plot twists can be when done well. The sudden appearance of Nadia after being declared dead creates a compelling tension that hooks readers instantly. Personal experience has shown me that mysteries like these captivate audiences because they challenge perceptions—what we think we know suddenly changes. The conversation between Finley, Skylar, and the detectives emphasizes how truth can be elusive, especially when conflicting timelines are involved. When Finley claims Nadia texted her after being left behind, it brings in the crucial role of technology and texting as modern tools for alibi and verification in mystery plots. What fascinated me most was the psychological complexity portrayed through Finley's subtle reactions—like the tightening of her jaw—that convey internal conflict or secrets unsaid. This adds depth, making characters feel more real and relatable. Moreover, the twist revealing a body found wearing Nadia’s clothes but not being her introduces the concept of mistaken identity or framing, a classic mystery element that keeps readers questioning the reality of the situation. From a storytelling perspective, the use of a public setting like a restaurant contrasting with serious police interrogation creates intriguing dynamics—normalcy disrupted by urgent, disturbing revelations. For anyone interested in mystery writing or reading, this excerpt exemplifies how layering suspense, character interplay, and unexpected revelations enrich the narrative experience, making readers eager to uncover what happens next. These elements come together to create a story that goes beyond a simple whodunit, exploring themes of deception, identity, and trust that resonate on a personal level.

Blue Lights
The local botanical gardens took on the tradition of a private residence that strung up a gazillion blue lights. It was very pretty, but walking in it was so different from driving through it. It gave me a headache and messed with my vision. Still, very cool to do #christmas #christmaslight
