Day 37 to a’s

hello ppls , this is my first post. I am ants and this is my first time posting on lemon after lurking for q a long time hehe :3 today i went through like 11 compiled prelim qns + 2022 p3 . Total time 4hrs 11 min

Do you ever just feel like you are absolutely cooked because today i just learnt of this thing called steric repulsion 😔

some things i thought were q ok now is ring closing ,

omytian i can finally close rings quickly and w/ accuracy but my arrow drawing is still kinda lacking.

Sometimes i feel very confused because on one hand we have the mechanism we are taught , yet the question gives us another synthesis pathway using some new reactant and somehow the nucleophilic addition now has 2 steps O_O and the intermediates look nothing like what you have tried to memorise 🙂🔫🔫🔫🔫

The end is near , a month or 2 more and we will be freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!! goodnight!

... Read moreFrom my experience working through past paper questions, one key to understanding molecule ring closures is to visualize the 3D structure to anticipate steric hindrance effects. Steric repulsion can really slow down your reaction rates or alter pathways, so practicing drawing these molecules from different angles helped me appreciate why some steps take unexpected routes. Also, focusing on Paper 3 practice is crucial—those questions often test your application of mechanisms under new conditions, requiring you to go beyond memorizing one pathway. For example, nucleophilic additions might involve multiple steps with unfamiliar intermediates, which initially confused me. I found it useful to break down each intermediate and relate them back to fundamental concepts like electron flow and stability. Don't be discouraged if arrows don't come naturally at first; regular practice with varied reaction sets builds both speed and accuracy. And if you find yourself mixed up about reactants or products, try annotating each step clearly, labeling groups like R' or R" to track changes. Finally, balancing your study sessions with mental breaks makes a big difference—I sometimes felt completely 'cooked' after long hours but reminded myself that persistence pays off. Hopefully, my reflections encourage anyone preparing for similar chemistry challenges to keep pushing forward. Good luck and stay curious!
