Night Architecture
Waking suddenly can feel strange because the brain does not fully reactivate all at once.
When this happens, areas involved in attention, orientation, and decision-making can still be transitioning out of sleep while consciousness has already returned.
This state is called sleep inertia.
The brain can become awake before it feels fully alert, which is why sudden waking can temporarily feel mentally slow, emotionally off, or briefly confusing.
This is one reason waking abruptly feels very different from gradually becoming awake naturally.
