Dreams can feel emotionally real because the brain does not process them the same way it processes waking experiences.
During dreaming, emotional areas of the brain can remain highly active while areas involved in logical evaluation and reality checking become less active.
Because of this, emotions inside dreams can feel stronger and more believable while they are happening.
The brain can temporarily react to dream experiences as if they are emotionally real in the moment, which is why some dreams still affect mood and emotion after waking.
