Self-Talk Rewiring

One detail the Reel skipped: in a different setup, psychologist Kate Sweeny’s team followed law graduates waiting months for bar exam results. Those with an especially painful wait felt a bigger boost from good news and a smaller blow from bad news. ... Read moreWaiting for uncertain news can be an emotionally challenging experience, often triggering persistent worry and anxious self-talk that replay worst-case scenarios. From personal experience, I found that the key to managing this overwhelming mental loop is to actively reframe the internal narrative. For example, during a stressful waiting period in my life, I practiced ‘testing the worst case’ by objectively considering what would truly happen if the feared outcome occurred. This aligns with psychological findings that conducting such mental experiments can weaken catastrophic beliefs and reduce anxiety over time. Another powerful strategy I tried was verbalizing my fears aloud. Instead of letting the anxiety silently cycle in my mind, I would say statements like, “I feel anxious about this unknown outcome,” which helped me confront and diminish the fear’s intensity. This technique is supported by evidence showing that naming the fear decreases physiological arousal associated with anxiety. Additionally, adopting an outside perspective—imagining the situation as a neutral observer rather than from my own anxious viewpoint—helped me feel more confident and less overwhelmed. This distancing approach allowed me to reduce emotional intensity without denying the reality of the uncertainty I faced. Research, including the work of psychologist Kate Sweeny on the emotional impact of waiting for bar exam results, indicates that those enduring painful waits experience mixed emotional effects from good and bad news, highlighting how the mind contends with uncertainty differently based on the context. Combining scientific insights with these personal strategies can empower anyone struggling with anxiety linked to uncertainty and prolonged waiting. Encouraging yourself to self-talk in constructive, evidence-based ways can rewire harmful patterns into resilience and calm.

This image introduces "Self-Talk Rewiring," explaining why talking to yourself as "you" can help. It shows common first-person self-talk examples like "I can do this" and "I need to calm down," contrasting with the suggested second-person approach.
This image, featuring a microscope icon, states that research suggests using second-person self-talk like "You can do this" creates psychological distance. This distance allows the brain to experience situations from a slightly different perspective.
This image, with a brain icon, explains that psychological distance helps individuals become less reactive and more reflective. It concludes that changing the internal voice from "I" to "you" can fundamentally alter one's experience.
Self-Talk Rewiring
Most people naturally speak to themselves using "I." "I can do this." "I need to calm down." "I'll figure it out." But research suggests that changing one small word can change perspective. Instead of: "I can do this." Try: "You can do this.&#
