I tried these fountain pens so you don’t have to!

I’m no expert when it comes to fountain pens but I’ve collected a few beginner friendly ones to try. If you’re looking to try a fountain pen for your journal, here are my two cents of each!

Platinum Meteor - ink just never dries out, it’s super smooth to write! it feels pretty light in the hand, so if you want one with more structure, maybe this pen isn’t for you. other than that, just don’t get the nib thinner than 03.

Muji polycarbonate fountain pen - this is actually made by Platinum, mechanism wise it’s the same as the Meteor pen. If you can’t find the Meteor, get this one ;)

Ellington Pens - Looks elegant but that’s it. The nib discolors over time and I don’t know why. Ink dries out super fast, if you won’t be touching this pen for over one week, good luck with that.

Pilot Kakuno - I have this in the M nib and it’s really smooth! the cap doesn’t really help prevent ink from drying out but it’s still a nice pen to have. I also highly recommend this!

Pilot 78G - shares the same nib as Pilot Kakuno but I got this in the F nib, it’s still pretty smooth but I prefer M nib. I’m pretty sure everything is the same except that it’s a screw cap and outer design!

Honorable mention: Sailor Hocoro dip pen - I know it’s a dip pen but I want to recommend to those who dont think they can commit to one ink color, so this dip pen is perfect for being able to switch ink as you like! Unlike conventional dip pen, the nib can be swapped to any size within the Hocoro range, as long as you have the pen body.

Personal rating: Platinum Meteor > Muji Polycarbonate > Pilot Kakuno > Sailor Hocoro > Pilot 78G > Ellington Pens

... Read moreGetting started with fountain pens can be so exciting, but also a little daunting with all the options out there! After trying a few beginner-friendly models, I've picked up some tips that I wish I knew when I first started, especially regarding common concerns like ink drying out or choosing the right nib. One of the biggest headaches for fountain pen users, especially beginners, is ink drying out in the nib or even leaking. My experience with the Platinum Meteor really highlights how important a good cap mechanism is. The 'Slip & Seal' cap, often noted for its 'cap mechanism that prevents ink from drying out,' truly makes a difference. It creates an airtight seal that keeps the nib moist. In contrast, pens like the Ellington, which I mentioned, sometimes suffer from 'dried-out ink cartridges' or 'discolored nibs' because they lack this crucial feature. If you’ve ever picked up a pen only to find it scratchy or completely dry, you know the frustration! To prevent this, always make sure your pen is capped securely when not in use. Some pens are just better designed for it, but a tight cap is your first line of defense. Beyond just preventing ink issues, the nib is the heart of your fountain pen. When starting out, many wonder about nib sizes like 'F nib' (fine) versus 'M nib' (medium). My Pilot Kakuno in M nib feels incredibly smooth, giving a lovely broad line for journaling. However, the Pilot 78G with an F nib, while still smooth, offers a finer line. It really depends on your writing style and paper. For detailed notes or smaller handwriting, an F nib might be perfect. For general writing or if you enjoy a bolder stroke, an M nib is fantastic. Don't be afraid to experiment! The 'smoothness rating' I mentioned in my reviews is heavily influenced by the nib, so pay attention to expert reviews and try to test them if you can. Proper maintenance is key to a happy fountain pen journey and avoiding issues like 'fountain pens that don't leak'. Regularly flushing your pens, especially when changing ink colors or if you won't use them for a while, can prevent clogs and ensure smooth flow. A 'transparent converter' on pens like the Platinum Meteor also helps you monitor ink levels, so you're never caught off guard. I’ve found that using good quality ink also makes a massive difference – cheap inks can sometimes cause more issues. For those experimental types, the Sailor Hocoro dip pen, with its 'retractable nib' and swappable options, is a great low-commitment way to try many inks without the full commitment of filling a pen. It’s perfect for testing new colors without worrying about clogs in your everyday writer. When you're first getting into fountain pens, it can feel overwhelming with all the choices. My advice, based on my own trial and error, is to start with a reliable, affordable pen like the Platinum Meteor or the Muji Polycarbonate. They offer a great entry point without breaking the bank and give you a fantastic 'smoothness rating' for the price. Don't immediately invest in a super expensive pen until you know what you truly like. And remember, the joy of fountain pens is in the experience – the tactile feel, the beautiful inks, and the personal touch they add to your writing. Happy writing!

Writech Colored Pens Review
These colored pens are great to use for any age. The colors are playful and creative! Writech pens never fail to amaze me. They don’t smudge or smear, and are great for note taking or drawing. I give this set a good 10/10! #learnonlemon8 #lemon8partner #lemon8college #stationerya
