OC designs: weirdcore aesthetics edition #1

Hey everyone! I'm so excited to dive a bit deeper into the world of weirdcore and dreamcore OCs, especially after sharing my latest creations like Phantom, Bitey, and Wilter! Designing characters that truly embody these aesthetics can be super fun, and I wanted to chat about how I approach it, and maybe give you some ideas for your own unique OCs. First off, what makes a weirdcore OC or a dreamcore OC special? For me, it's about capturing that eerie, nostalgic, or slightly unsettling feeling. Think of distorted realities, forgotten internet spaces, or the hazy, illogical nature of dreams. Your character doesn't have to be overtly scary, but they should evoke a sense of 'something's not quite right.' When I was brainstorming Phantom, I focused on making them feel like a glitch in reality, almost a forgotten data fragment. When you're creating weirdcore characters or dreamcore characters, start by thinking about key weirdcore elements or dreamcore elements. Are they influenced by old Windows XP aesthetics, static on a TV screen, or perhaps a faded, grainy photograph? For Bitey, I imagined a creature that was half-seen in a nightmare, with familiar yet unsettling features. Consider color palettes – often muted, desaturated, or with pops of unnatural, glowing colors. The backgrounds in weirdcore often feature liminal spaces, like empty hallways or endless fields, so your character's environment can also inspire their design. Naming your dreamcore OCs or weirdcore OCs can also enhance their vibe! I often look for words that are slightly off-kilter, or evoke a sense of melancholy or forgotten technology. Names like 'Scribbul' or 'Cookee' might sound innocent, but I try to pair them with visuals that hint at something deeper or more complex. There are tons of weirdcore usernames generators online if you need a kickstart, or you can just play around with unusual word combinations. Don't be afraid to experiment with aesthetics for OCs. What if your character has a head that's a security camera, or limbs made of tangled wires? What if they're constantly shifting, like a corrupted video file? For Wilter, I wanted to combine decay with a sense of artificiality, giving them a broken, almost digital appearance. Embrace the unsettling elements – that's often where the magic happens! You don't need a weirdcore drawing base to start; sometimes just sketching out abstract shapes or feelings can lead to really cool character design ideas. Remember, the beauty of dreamcore weirdcore characters is that there are no strict rules. It's about personal interpretation and playing with psychological discomfort and nostalgia.
