"But you don't look chronically ill!"

FND is not a rare condition, but it is a hidden one. It's one that often goes undiagnosed because people, even medical professionals, don't understand it. You never know what a person is going through behind closed doors. A person doesn't have to "look" ill to be treated with compassion and respect. Me not looking chronically ill does not change the fact that I am.

... Read moreFunctional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a complex condition that affects the nervous system, causing symptoms that can mimic neurological diseases such as seizures, weakness, or movement disorders. Despite being relatively common, FND remains underdiagnosed and misunderstood by many, including healthcare professionals. One of the main challenges people with FND face is the invisibility of the illness — outward appearances can be misleading, and many patients do not "look" ill, which can lead to misconceptions and a lack of empathy from others. Living with FND often means dealing with symptoms like involuntary movements, functional seizures, or sensory disturbances that are real and debilitating, even if there is no clear structural brain damage observable on scans. This disconnect between visible symptoms and actual suffering contributes to stigma and isolation. It’s crucial to recognize that chronic illness is not always outwardly apparent, and assumptions based solely on appearance can impair the quality of care and support these individuals receive. For people with FND, finding proper diagnosis and treatment can be a long and frustrating journey. Awareness and education are key to improving understanding among medical professionals and the general public. Compassionate care involves listening to patients' experiences and validating their symptoms, regardless of whether they "look chronically ill." Support networks and communities, both online and offline, provide valuable resources for those navigating this condition. If you or a loved one live with FND or similar invisible illnesses, know that your experience is real and deserves respect. Advocating for yourself by educating others about FND can foster greater awareness and acceptance. Remember, chronic illness is more than skin-deep — it affects people in profound ways, even when not outwardly visible.
