... Read moreAs a devoted cat parent, I've noticed my cat exhibiting some pretty unique behaviors lately. It made me wonder, 'Can cats actually get OCD?' After seeing some of their repetitive actions, it really seemed like my cat might have OCD. It turns out, felines can indeed develop what's formally known as Feline Compulsive Disorder (FCD), which is quite similar to human OCD. So, what exactly are the signs of OCD in cats? It's not about being super neat, but rather about repetitive behaviors that seem out of context, exaggerated, or interfere with their daily life. For instance, my cat sometimes gets into these intense grooming sessions, almost like an obsessive-compulsive kitten. They'll lick and lick a spot until the fur is thin, or even pull out hair. This over-grooming is one of the most common signs. Other cats might engage in pica, which is eating non-food items like fabric, plastic, or even dirt. I've heard of an 'OCD cat' who would compulsively suck on wool blankets, which is another form of this disorder. Another behavior I've observed, which made me think, 'My cat seems to have OCD,' involves their movement. Sometimes, they seem to have very rigid routines, like 'Wehavetogoinastraightline.' when moving between rooms, or they might pace compulsively. If your cat obsessively guards certain items or spaces, like 'occupying his space' with an almost aggressive protectiveness when no threat is present, that could also be a sign. Some cats might also vocalize excessively or chase their tails to the point of self-injury. What causes these behaviors? Often, it's a mix of genetics, stress, boredom, or anxiety. A significant change in environment, a lack of mental or physical stimulation, or even underlying medical conditions can trigger or worsen FCD. For example, if 'My cat hates garbage' and becomes overly distressed or obsessive about preventing me from taking it out, that might point to a deeper anxiety issue manifesting as a compulsive behavior. If you suspect your cat has OCD, the first step is always a visit to the vet. They can rule out any medical reasons for the behavior, like skin allergies causing excessive licking. Once medical causes are excluded, they might refer you to a veterinary behaviorist. They can help you understand 'how do i make this stop' by developing a behavioral modification plan. This often involves enriching their environment with more toys, scratching posts, puzzle feeders, and regular playtime to reduce boredom and anxiety. Creating a consistent routine and providing a safe, predictable home environment can also work wonders. In some cases, medication might be prescribed as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It's important to remember that these behaviors aren't something your cat can simply control. Understanding and patience are key. By identifying the signs of OCD in cats and seeking professional help, you can improve your furry friend's quality of life significantly. It's all about helping our beloved companions live their happiest, healthiest lives!

Step 6: Coding ICD-10-CM
Check for “Excludes” notes In the Tabular: Excludes1 = NEVER code both together (mutually exclusive). Excludes2 = Both can be coded if both apply (the condition listed is not part of the first one). Why you care: this prevents you from double-coding something that’s clinically the same thing
