Storytime: How I Prioritize My MCAT Studying

I have started and stopped studying for the MCAT too many times. This time I have decided to stick with it and to accomplish this I've been utilizing charts and digital forms. I have taken all the chapters from the Kaplan books and organized them by content prioritization to make sure spending the correct amount of time studying the content with the highest yield on the test.

I decided to share this breakdown with anyone who may need it! I have learned over time that the biggest reason I was having trouble studying was that I was not keeping my information organized and I did not have good self-management skills.

I work full-time, so my study schedule is untraditional, but I have a great support system and other self-made tools that will help me get through this first phase of my medical career.

... Read moreNavigating MCAT prep can feel overwhelming, especially when you're juggling other responsibilities like a full-time job, just like I am! Beyond just prioritizing content, I've discovered some game-changing strategies for time management and creating an environment that fosters deep learning. Let's talk time management first. Since my schedule isn't traditional, I've had to get creative. Instead of aiming for long, uninterrupted blocks, I've embraced the Pomodoro Technique – 25 minutes of focused study, followed by a 5-minute break. This keeps my brain from burnout and makes even short bursts of study incredibly productive. I also swear by a weekly review session every Sunday. This isn't just for catching up; it's where I map out my entire study week, slotting in specific topics and practice questions. Using a digital calendar and setting reminders has been crucial. It’s all about being intentional with every minute. Another area where I found immense benefit was optimizing my study space. My study desk isn't just a place to put my books; it's my command center! I learned that a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. So, I keep it minimalist: my laptop, a dedicated notebook for active recall, and a water bottle. On the wall above my desk, you'll find colorful sticky notes summarizing key formulas or challenging concepts – a quick visual reminder that truly helps. The charts I mentioned earlier, detailing content prioritization, are always within arm's reach or digitally accessible, guiding my focus. Good lighting is also non-negotiable; it helps reduce eye strain during those long study sessions. Finally, for those tricky memorization topics, specifically like amino acids, I found a secret weapon: Quizlet. Seriously, if you're struggling with the different structures, names, or one-letter codes for amino acids, Quizlet flashcards are a lifesaver. I didn't just use pre-made sets; I often created my own, adding mnemonics or personal triggers to make the information stick. The 'learn' and 'match' features on Quizlet turned a daunting task into an engaging challenge. It's a fantastic tool for active recall and spaced repetition, which are vital for MCAT success. Implementing these strategies – disciplined time blocking, an organized and distraction-free study environment, and smart use of tools like Quizlet – has truly transformed my MCAT journey. It's not just about studying harder; it's about studying smarter and creating systems that support your goals.
