Walking has been so great for my mental health!

If I learned anything in motherhood… it’s that movement is medicine. Not just for the body, but for the mind, the spirit, and the parts of us that get stretched thin by the invisible work we carry.

Walking became my entry point back to myself. After kids, my body changed, my routines changed, and my capacity shifted but a 20-minute walk didn’t ask for perfection. It didn’t require a babysitter, a gym membership, or a dramatic lifestyle overhaul. It just required showing up.

Movement has helped me regulate my nervous system, boost my patience, process the mental load, and reconnect to my own pace of life. And honestly, that’s been the most healing part, learning that health doesn’t have to be loud or extreme. It can look like quiet consistency.

This year, I’m choosing health in every sense: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Because when I move, I mother better. I partner better. I breathe better. I feel more like me.

Movement is medicine for the woman behind all the roles she holds. When’s the last time you went for a walk?

... Read moreAs someone who has experienced the transformative effects of walking on mental health, I can wholeheartedly attest to how movement can truly be medicine. Walking, in particular, has been a gentle yet effective way to care for my mental and emotional well-being. Unlike high-intensity workouts that require strict schedules or equipment, walking offers the flexibility to be done anywhere, anytime — even with kids in tow or during small pockets of free time. Personally, incorporating a 20-minute walk into my daily routine helped me navigate the overwhelming invisible workload that often accompanies motherhood. It offered a structured moment to breathe, process my thoughts, and reconnect with my own pace of life amidst the chaos. The consistency of this small movement built up my patience, reduced feelings of anxiety, and regulated my nervous system without the pressure of perfection. I found that walking outdoors further enhanced these benefits — the exposure to nature, fresh air, and sunlight plays a crucial role in boosting mood and mental clarity. Whether walking through a neighborhood park or simply around the block, these moments became sacred retreats to nurture my spirit. For anyone balancing multiple roles, especially mothers adjusting to postpartum changes, walking provides a practical yet profoundly restorative tool. It’s accessible without the need for a gym membership, babysitter, or elaborate routine. More importantly, it encourages self-compassion, allowing movement to be about feeling better rather than performing better. If you haven’t taken a walk for a while, consider starting small. Even short, regular walks can help combat the mental load, improve emotional resilience, and support overall health. After all, movement is medicine — not only for the body but for the mind and soul as well.
