Hey everyone! Following up on the super important scam warnings we've been sharing, I wanted to quickly touch on another type of scam that's been making the rounds and can be really scary: jury duty scam calls. While the original post talked about those tempting 'free tech' offers (which are totally fake, by the way – don't fall for a 'free laptop' or PS5!), scammers are constantly finding new ways to trick us. I recently heard a friend's story about getting one of these calls, and it sounded so official, it almost got them! Basically, these scammers pretend to be officers or court officials, telling you that you've missed jury duty and now face arrest or a hefty fine. They create a huge sense of urgency and fear, hoping you'll panic and pay up without thinking. Here’s how they often work: They’ll call you, sometimes even spoofing a local courthouse number to make it look legitimate on your caller ID. They'll claim there's a warrant out for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury service. Then, they demand immediate payment, usually through untraceable methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or even cryptocurrency. They might even try to get you to log onto a fake portal on your laptop or phone to 'verify' a payment, which is just another way to steal your info. But here's the crucial thing: Courts will NEVER call you to demand money over the phone for missing jury duty. Official jury summons are almost always sent via mail. If you legitimately miss jury service, the court will typically send a follow-up notice by mail, not threaten immediate arrest over a phone call demanding gift cards. They also won't ask for sensitive personal information like your Social Security number or bank details over the phone in such a manner. So, what should you do if you get one of these calls? My advice is simple: Hang up immediately. Don't engage with them. Do NOT provide any personal information or money. No gift card numbers, no bank info, nothing. Verify independently. If you're genuinely concerned about jury duty, contact your local court clerk directly using the official phone number from their website (not a number the caller gives you). Report it. You can report these scams to your local law enforcement or the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Sharing your experience can help protect others from falling victim. It's so important to stay vigilant. Just like with those 'free' Apple product scams, if something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is.
